Description

Mark 10: (32-34) 35-45

As James and John requested special seats next to Jesus in heaven, Jesus reminded them that humility in this life is more important that saving seats in the next.  Jesus, who was fully God, humbled himself as a lowly man on this earth.  He was a perfect example of humility and God exalted Him. To be great in God’s kingdom means humbly serving others like the example that Jesus gave us.

Invocation and Introduction of Today’s Theme

Pastor              King Jesus, we give you our full attention right now.

ALL                  We pledge our allegiance to you.

Pastor              You are the perfect example of a submissive servant.

ALL                  May we learn from you, Jesus.

Opening Prayer

Pastor            Father, we want to be nearer to you than before.  It is your death on the cross that draws us closer to you.  Fade the treasures of this world                                  and magnify your gift of eternal life in our hearts today.  Let us desire to serve others the way you did.

ALL                  Be magnified O Lord! Amen.

Time of Greeting

Time of Confession and Forgiveness

[Alternate location:  following Message]

Pastor           Father, we boldly approach your throne of grace knowing that you extend your love and

grace to even sinners like us.

ALL                Just like the Israelites, we fall short of your glory.

Pastor           But you’ve given us a new covenant through your Son and have written the law of love on

our hearts and minds.  We are your children, and you have forgiven us because of the

blood shed for us.

ALL                You remember our sins no more; you forgive our wickedness and call us your

                        own.

Pastor              What a privilege it is to be your children.  Thank you, Father.  Amen.

… We Hear God’s Word …

[Read aloud both the introduction and Scripture]

First Reading                                  Jeremiah 31:31-34

The old covenant between God and the Israelites had been broken, but God promised a new covenant that would be written

on the hearts and minds of the Israelites.

31 “The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and with the people of Judah. 32 It will not be like the covenant I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they broke my covenant, though I was a husband to them,” declares the Lord. 33 “This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time,” declares the Lord. “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. 34No longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’
because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest,” declares the Lord. “For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.”

Second Reading                             Hebrews 5:1-10

Jesus Christ was the designated high priest forever that was ordained by God.  Because of His reverent submission to His Father, Christ could fully take on this significant role of salvation.

Every high priest is selected from among the people and is appointed to represent the people in matters related to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He is able to deal gently with those who are ignorant and are going astray, since he himself is subject to weakness. 3 This is why he has to offer sacrifices for his own sins, as well as for the sins of the people. 4 And no one takes this honor on himself, but he receives it when called by God, just as Aaron was. 5In the same way, Christ did not take on himself the glory of becoming a high priest. But God said to him, “You are my Son; today I have become your Father.”  6 And he says in another place, “You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.” 7 During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him 10 and was designated by God to be high priest in the order of Melchizedek.
