Description

Luke 15:1-3, 11b-32

As Jesus sat talking and eating with tax collectors and sinners, he shared the familiar parable of the prodigal son who squandered his inheritance and indulged in wild living.  When the son returned home repentant and remorseful, his father clothed him in the finest garments and threw him a party to celebrate the return of his lost son.  The older son was angry and didn’t understand, but his father assured him that this return was worthy of rejoicing.  Rejoice when those who were once lost are found.  Leave their past behind them where it belongs, and embrace them like the Father embraced you.

Time of Confession and Forgiveness

[Alternate location:  following Message]

Pastor               It’s a wonderful mystery and a beautiful truth that we are loved by a good, good Father.

In fact, His love knows no bounds.  Even His only Son was sacrificed for us on a cross

at Calvary so that we could be reconciled to God, the Father.

ALL                  We are sinners, we confess.  We need and accept the forgiveness of Jesus Christ

who made atonement for our sins.

Pastor               Be reconciled to God who made Jesus, who was perfect and unblemished, to be sin for

                        us.

ALL                  And because of Christ, we have become the righteousness of God!  Praise the

                        Lord, oh my soul!

Pastor               Thank you, Lord. Amen.

…  We Hear God’s Word  …

[Read aloud both the introduction and Scripture]

First Reading                                  Isaiah 12:1-6

There would come a day when the Israelites would praise the Lord for turning away His anger.  They would sing songs of praise to Him.

In that day you will say: “I will praise you, Lord. Although you were angry with me, your anger has turned away and you have comforted me. Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. The Lord, the Lord himself, is my strength and my defense; he has become my salvation.” With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation. In that day you will say: “Give praise to the Lord, proclaim his name;
make known among the nations what he has done, and proclaim that his name is exalted. Sing to the Lord, for he has done glorious things; let this be known to all the world. Shout aloud and sing for joy, people of Zion, for great is the Holy One of Israel among you.”
