Description

Mark 1:29-39

Mark, in his Gospel, writes of the very beginnings of Jesus’ ministry. He has been baptized, tested in the wilderness and now He is calling His disciples. Jesus is teaching throughout Galilee in the synagogues and performing miracles- driving out demons and healing the sick. Word is spreading fast about Him.

Invocation

Pastor / Worship Leader

Loving God, whose touch can heal the broken places of life, touch us today.

Worshipers

God of peace, whose spirit of peace can quiet our spirits of confusion and despair,

reassure us today.

Pastor / Worship Leader

Forgiving God, whose call to repentance promises grace upon grace, place your mercy in our souls today.

Worshipers

You who heal the sick and liberate the imprisoned, who bring justice in the midst of oppression.

and strength in the midst of weakness, pour out your spirit of power upon us today.

Pastor / Worship Leader

Open our hearts to new faithfulness, redirect our waywardness, and hold us gently in your goodness.

Worshipers

We confess our need to you, and we turn to you with hearts filled with hope, remembering the promises you have made to us.

Pastor / Worship Leader

May your name be glorified in us and through us. We ask it through Christ Jesus, your only begotten son, he who is our Lord and our Savior, our brother, and our friend.

Worshipers

   Amen!

Opening Prayer / Theme Introduction

Pastor / Worship Leader

Lord God, through Jesus you opened the eyes of the blind; you healed the sick and you fed the hungry. We give you thanks and praise for your mercy and your love. Loving Father, by the Spirit you restore strength to the weary and give hope to those who are in despair. You call us Lord to proclaim your deeds and your wonders to all people, You call us to worship and serve you that all may be made whole.

You offer us a new life of righteousness. Make us worthy, O Lord, to receive all your gifts. Descend on us like the light of a new day, give light to our souls and put your praise upon our lips.

Worshipers

We give you thanks and praise for your mercy and your love. Amen!

Time of Confession and Forgiveness

[Alternate location:  following Message]

Pastor / Worship Leader

   Lord, we confess.

Worshipers

How can we look at this world and not sing of your praises, O God? The beauty and majesty of the world is overpowering! Yet we often take all that you do for us for granted.

Pastor / Worship Leader

We turn our backs on people in need, the weak and downtrodden go unnoticed in our midst. We always believe that someone else will care for those in need.

Worshipers

Forgive us, O God, when we deprive people of the love, we owe them as people unconditionally loved by you.

Pastor / Worship Leader

Forgive us and help us to see people with your eyes, Jesus, and to be moved by your compassion so that we become active and fearless bearers of healing and mercy.

Worshipers

God, you loved this world so much that you sent your own son, Jesus Christ to live and die among us, in order that we might have life. Forgive us for keeping that abundant life to ourselves.

Pastor / Worship Leader

   Amen!

Worshipers

   Amen!

…  We Hear God’s Word  …

[Read aloud both the introduction and Scripture]

First Reading                             Isaiah 40:21-31

The Prophet Isaiah, beginning in chapter 40 most likely writes to the Israelites held in Babylonian captivity. He points to a God as beyond compare, who says, “Who is my equal?” Isaiah tells them to look up in wonder and understand that the Lord is indeed there, everlasting and beyond understanding. It is those who hope in the Lord who will not grow tired but will be renewed.

Do you not know? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood since the earth was founded? 22 He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers. He stretches out the heavens like a canopy and spreads them out like a tent to live in. 23 He brings princes to naught and reduces the rulers of this world to nothing. 24 No sooner are they planted, no sooner are they sown, no sooner do they take root in the ground, than he blows on them and they wither, and a whirlwind sweeps them away like chaff. 25 “To whom will you compare me? Or who is my equal?” says the Holy One. 26 Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one and calls forth each of them by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing. 27 Why do you complain, Jacob? Why do you say, Israel, “My way is hidden from the Lord; my cause is disregarded by my God”? 28 Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. 29 He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. 30 Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; 31 but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.
