Beyond the Need: Here is a powerful statement: the need is not the call. We so often think that if we are needed, that must be where we are to serve. Jesus had healed Simon’s mother-in-law and all the sick people of Capernaum had brought to Him after sunset on a Sabbath. The next day, Jesus was told that the people of Capernaum were looking for Him. They wanted more. They wanted to be in His presence. But that was not why Jesus came. He did not come to be the chaplain to Capernaum, even though they had needs. He spoke His mission statement: “Let us go to the villages that I may preach there, for that is why I came.” He came to bring the Good News beyond Capernaum, to you and me, and through us, to all people.
