Description

John 1: (1-9) 10-18

Where there was darkness, God spoke light.  The dark days of hoping and waiting for the Promised Savior finally ended when the Light of all mankind- Jesus- entered as the Word made flesh.  From the beginning, He was with God, and He is God!  Through Jesus Christ alone we can intimately know the Father and become beloved children of God.

Invocation

Pastor / Worship Leader

Welcome to the first Sunday of 2022!  It has been an eventful 2021 (insert here some highlights/events that happened in your church from 2021).  Let’s praise the Lord for all that He did in 2021 and for everything He is going to do in 2022.

Worshipers

Lord, we praise You!  We surrender the things of the past, and we surrender the things of the future to You.  You work for the good of those who love You, and we trust You.  Thank you for bringing us through the storms, the fires, and the pain.  Thank You for bringing us to the foot of the cross every single time.  Carry us when we are weak, for You are strong.  In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

Opening Prayer / Theme Introduction

Pastor / Worship Leader

Lord may our praises rise before You as sweet incense today.  May You accept our worship as an offering, and may our eyes and hearts be focused upon You.  We invite the Holy Spirit into this time and place.  He is already here; we just want to welcome Him.

Worshipers

   We welcome You, Holy Spirit.

Pastor / Worship Leader

In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.  Amen.  Let’s praise the Lord!

Time of Confession and Forgiveness

[Alternate location:  following Message]

Pastor / Worship Leader

Father, when you search our hearts, what do you find? You may find the desire to get ahead in life, to gain the extra bonus, to buy the bigger house or car, and to gain the things of this world.  You may find the struggle to compare our lives to others around us, to keep up with the Jones’s so to speak, or to impress our friends with our possessions.

Worshipers

We confess that these desires do not come from you.  Forgive us, Lord.

Pastor / Worship Leader

Lord, we confess these to You, and we feel the heavy weight of sin that shackles us to shame, guilt, and pride.  Would you forgive us?

Worshipers

You set us free by the blood of the Lamb.  You have paid the price for this heavy weight of sin, and You have broken the shackles of sin and given us life and freedom.  This is what we desire!  We desire Jesus!

Pastor / Worship Leader

We thank You, Jesus, and we praise You for the forgiveness of sins.

Worshipers

In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit we pray, amen.

…  We Hear God’s Word  …

[Read aloud both the introduction and Scripture]

First Reading                                  Jeremiah 31:7-14

There would be a day when the Lord would turn around the circumstances of the Israelites bringing them from darkness to dancing, scattered to gathered, and sorrow to joy.

This is what the Lord says: “Sing with joy for Jacob; shout for the foremost of the nations. Make your praises heard, and say, ‘Lord, save your people, the remnant of Israel.’ See, I will bring them from the land of the north and gather them from the ends of the earth. Among them will be the blind and the lame,
expectant mothers and women in labor; a great throng will return. They will come with weeping; they will pray as I bring them back. I will lead them beside streams of water on a level path where they will not stumble, because I am Israel’s father, and Ephraim is my firstborn son. 10 “Hear the word of the Lord, you nations; proclaim it in distant coastlands: ‘He who scattered Israel will gather them and will watch over his flock like a shepherd.’ 11 For the Lord will deliver Jacob and redeem them from the hand of those stronger than they. 12 They will come and shout for joy on the heights of Zion; they will rejoice in the bounty of the Lord— the grain, the new wine and the olive oil, the young of the flocks and herds. They will be like a well-watered garden, and they will sorrow no more. 13 Then young women will dance and be glad, young men and old as well. I will turn their mourning into gladness; I will give them comfort and joy instead of sorrow. 14 I will satisfy the priests with abundance, and my people will be filled with my bounty,” declares the Lord.
