Description

 Mark 6:14-29

Upon the request of Herodias’ daughter, King Herod agreed to behead John the Baptist to please his dinner guests.  This ended the ministry of the man who was chosen to “Prepare the way for the Lord,” but only paved the beginning of the powerful work of Christ on earth and in the hearts of men.

Invocation

Pastor               Greetings in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ!

ALL                  Greetings to you.

Pastor               Praise the Lord in Heaven who pours out on us spiritual blessings in Christ Jesus!

ALL                  Praise the Lord!

Opening Prayer / Theme Introduction

Pastor              Father God, you chose people like John the Baptist—a wilderness locust eating man—to

accomplish your plan on earth.  You call people like us to bring you glory.  As we hear

your Word today, quicken our hearts and minds to understand and fill our hearts with a

strong desire to draw nearer than ever before to you.  In your holy, awesome name we

                        pray, Jesus,

 ALL                 Amen!

Time of Confession and Forgiveness

[Alternate location:  following Message]

Pastor               When you call our name, Lord, we don’t always listen.  The voices in our culture and in

our own minds are louder than yours.  We’ve made it a habit to value our own ideas and

                        comfort over your calling.

ALL                  Would you forgive us, Father?  We have sinned and gone in our own direction.

Pastor               Help us to desire you more than anyone or anything, Lord.

ALL                  May the earthly temptations fade, and may you be the loudest voice in our lives.

Pastor               Thank you, Father, for your forgiveness.

ALL                  Yes, thank you, Father.  Amen.

…  We Hear God’s Word  …

[Read aloud both the introduction and Scripture]

First Reading                                  Amos 7:7-15

Amos had the difficult job of being God’s prophet to the people of Israel.  He was commanded by the Lord to leave the life of a shepherd and to prophesy the words spoke to him.

This is what he showed me: The Lord was standing by a wall that had been built true to plumb, with a plumb line in his hand. And the Lord asked me, “What do you see, Amos?” “A plumb line,” I replied. Then the Lord said, “Look, I am setting a plumb line among my people Israel; I will spare them no longer. “The high places of Isaac will be destroyed and the sanctuaries of Israel will be ruined; with my sword I will rise against the house of Jeroboam.” 10 Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent a message to Jeroboam king of Israel: “Amos is raising a conspiracy against you in the very heart of Israel. The land cannot bear all his words. 11 For this is what Amos is saying: “‘Jeroboam will die by the sword, and Israel will surely go into exile, away from their native land.’” 12 Then Amaziah said to Amos, “Get out, you seer! Go back to the land of Judah. Earn your bread there and do your prophesying there. 13 Don’t prophesy anymore at Bethel, because this is the king’s sanctuary and the temple of the kingdom.” 14 Amos answered Amaziah, “I was neither a prophet nor the son of a prophet, but I was a shepherd, and I also took care of sycamore-fig trees. 15 But the Lord took me from tending the flock and said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to my people Israel.’
