Description

Mark 1:14-20

Jesus began His ministry by proclaiming the Good News of God, calling people to repentance and belief.  He called Simon, Andrew, James, and John to follow Him, and they immediately left their nets and followed.  As God’s people, we are called to respond to the Good News of Jesus with repentance and faith.  Just as the disciples left everything to follow Him, we are called to prioritize our commitment to Christ above all else.

Invocation

Pastor / Worship Leader

We are gathered in the spirit of fellowship, united by the transformative power of the Gospel.  Just like Jesus called His disciples to leave their nets and follow Him, we are called to embark on a journey of faith together, casting aside our nets that are full of distractions and burdens, to follow Jesus.

Worshipers

We come with open hearts and minds, welcoming one another in the name of Jesus.

Opening Prayer / Theme Introduction

Pastor / Worship Leader

Let us pray.  Heavenly Father, we embrace Your calling.  We don’t know what lies ahead, but we commit to follow You.  Help us, we pray, today and always.  May we keep our eyes fixed on You- the Author of our faith.

Worshipers

May the stories of our lives be one that brings You glory, shows Your redemption, love, and grace, and ends in eternal life.  Lord, we are Yours.  Amen.

Time of Confession and Forgiveness

[Alternate location:  following Message]

Pastor / Worship Leader

   Merciful Savior,

Worshipers

We confess we have become entangled by the concerns of this world, hesitant to let go of our “nets” and follow You wholeheartedly and without hesitation.  We have given into fear instead of trusting You to lead us.  Forgive us, Lord.

Pastor / Worship Leader

Jesus, You were one of us- both God and man- and understand the human condition.  We are frail, impatient, and lack patience and understanding.  Yet, when we turn to You with contrite hearts, You readily and freely give us forgiveness and a renewed invitation to follow You.  So, may we be encouraged today and trust in Your loving presence and guidance.

Worshipers

Thank You for Your forgiveness.  Thank You for Your grace.  We are ready to commit to following You.  In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.

…  We Hear God’s Word  …

[Read aloud both the introduction and Scripture]

First Reading                             Jonah 3:1-5,10

God gave Jonah a second chance to deliver His message of repentance to the city of Nineveh.  Jonah obeyed this time and proclaimed God’s impending judgment, leading the people to repent and turn to God.

Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time: “Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim to it the message I give you.” Jonah obeyed the word of the Lord and went to Nineveh. Now Nineveh was a very large city; it took three days to go through it. Jonah began by going a day’s journey into the city, proclaiming, “Forty more days and Nineveh will be overthrown.” The Ninevites believed God. A fast was proclaimed, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth.

10 When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he relented and did not bring on them the destruction he had threatened.
