Description

John 12:20-33

Following Jesus means losing control of this temporary life on earth and gaining eternal life in Heaven with Him someday.  As Jesus addressed the Greeks who wanted to see Him, He explained his coming and necessary death that would glorify God the Father and carry out His will.  Death is a necessary part of life, and to gain eternal life, we must die to ourselves and surrender to Christ the King.

Invocation and Introduction of Today’s Theme

Pastor              King Jesus, we give you our full attention right now.

ALL                  We pledge our allegiance to you.

Pastor             During this season, we have read of your coming and your ministry on this earth. You told your disciples of your death and resurrection that                              would draw all people to you.  So, we ask you now,

ALL                  Draw us to you, Jesus.

Opening Prayer

Pastor             Father, we want to be nearer to you than before.  It is your death on the cross that draws us closer to you.  Fade the treasures of this world                                  and magnify your gift of eternal life in our hearts today.

ALL                  Be magnified O Lord! Amen.

Time of Greeting

Time of Confession and Forgiveness

[Alternate location:  following Message]

Pastor             Father, we boldly approach your throne of grace knowing that you extend your love and

grace to even sinners like us.

ALL                 Just like the Israelites, we fall short of your glory.

Pastor            But you’ve given us a new covenant through your Son and have written the law of love on

our hearts and minds.  We are your children, and you have forgiven us because of the

blood shed for us.

ALL                 You remember our sins no more; you forgive our wickedness and call us your

                         own.

Pastor            What a privilege it is to be your children.  Thank you, Father.  Amen.

… We Hear God’s Word …

[Read aloud both the introduction and Scripture]

First Reading                                  Jeremiah 31:31-34

The old covenant between God and the Israelites had been broken, but God promised a new covenant that would be written on the hearts and minds of the Israelites.

“The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel
and with the people of Judah. 32 It will not be like the covenant I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they broke my covenant, though I was a husband to them” declares the Lord. 33 “This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time,” declares the Lord. “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. 34 No longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’ because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest,” declares the Lord. “For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.”
