Description

Mark 1:9-15

After Jesus was baptized by John in the Jordan, He was sent to the wilderness by the Spirit.  For forty days, Jesus was in the desert where He was tempted by Satan.  He endured the temptation never giving into sin and the angels attended Him.  From there, empowered by the Spirit of God, Jesus proclaimed an urgent message calling our focus and attention to repent and believe in the Gospel.

Opening Prayer / Theme Introduction

Pastor / Worship Leader

Heavenly Father full of love, compassion, and grace, You are long suffering and merciful with us.  You promised a Covenant with Abraham and You’ve made a blood Covenant with us through Your precious Son, Jesus Christ.  He suffered in his humanity and rose in His divinity.   He emptied His blood and covered our sins with it.  In our sufferings and trials here on this earth, we ask that You’d give us the same strength that You gave Your Son to endure temptations, persecution, and earthly death only to arise with You in eternity.  It’s in Your Son’s name we ask this.

Worshipers

   Amen.

Time of Confession and Forgiveness

[Alternate location:  following Message]

Pastor / Worship Leader

Now is the time to confess to the Lord.  Now is the time to repent.

Worshipers

For our time on this earth is short, and we are to live in the freedom that Christ has offered freely to us.

Pastor / Worship Leader

But too often we choose to walk in the path of shame with our heads low and feeling guilty.

Worshipers

Show us Your ways, Lord.  Teach us Your paths.  Guide us in Your truth and teach us, for You are God our Savior!  Our hope is in You all day long.

Pastor / Worship Leader

Lord, instruct us and help us hold true to Your commandments.  Forget our rebellious ways and sins of our past.  According to Your love, forgive us.

Worshipers

For You, Lord, are good.  Amen.

…  We Hear God’s Word  …

[Read aloud both the introduction and Scripture]

First Reading                                  Genesis 9:8-17

After Noah’s obedience to God in building the ark, God established a covenant with all living creatures on the earth.  The rainbow is a sign of God’s covenant.

Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him: “I now establish my covenant with you and with your descendants after you 10 and with every living creature that was with you—the birds, the livestock and all the wild animals, all those that came out of the ark with you—every living creature on earth. 11 I establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life be destroyed by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth.” 12 And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: 13 I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 14 Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, 15 I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life. 16 Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth.” 17 So God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant I have established between me and all life on the earth.”
