Description

Mark 2:23-3:6

Familiar with the Sabbath Law, Jesus went through the grain fields with His disciples and even healed a man of a shriveled hand on the Sabbath.  When approached by the Pharisees, Jesus boldly spoke, “…the Son of Man is Lord of even of the Sabbath.”  Appalled, the Pharisees plotted His death.  Jesus wasn’t about checking off a rule checklist as the Pharisees watched His every move.  He knew the motives behind their hearts and proved that God would heal and work even on the Sabbath.  After all, the Sabbath was created so that humans could rest from their work, not from divine opportunities.

ALL                  He commands us to rest, also.

Pastor               To rest from our daily work and honor the Lord, this is His command.

ALL                  Amen!

Opening Prayer / Theme Introduction

   Pastor/Worship Leader speaks

Pastor                Lord, thank you for giving us life.  Thank you for shining your light in our darkness.  We want to live out the calling that you have placed on our lives.  We desire to                              honor your not only with our lips, but our actions.  Give us strength to endure hardship for your name and to rest from life’s demands in order to align our hearts                                  with yours.

ALL                  We honor your holy name and chase after you, Lord.  Amen.

Time of Confession and Forgiveness

[Alternate location:  following Message]

Pastor               Lord, we honor you with our lips, but not always with our actions.  You ask us to keep the Sabbath holy, but we admit that it is difficult to lay aside what we want to                             accomplish in our daily lives to honor Your agenda.

ALL                  Forgive us, Lord.

Pastor               Yes, forgive us when we establish our own rules and regulations and esteem them higher than Your law of love.

ALL                  Forgive us, Lord.

Pastor               We want to sit at your feet like Mary, take in your glorious presence, and rest in you.

ALL                  Teach us, Lord.  Amen.

…  We Hear God’s Word  …

[Read aloud both the introduction and Scripture]

First Reading                                  Deuteronomy 5:12-15

God commanded His people to observe the Sabbath in order to rest from their work.  He reminded them of their deliverance from slavery and

commanded them to keep the Sabbath holy.

Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy, as the Lord your God has commanded you. 13 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 14 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your ox, your donkey or any of your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns, so that your male and female servants may rest, as you do. 15 Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and that the Lord your God brought you out of there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the Lord your God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath day.
