Description

Mark 7:1-13

The Pharisees and teachers of the law are now looking at the actions of Jesus and His disciples. They notice violations of tradition, like not washing their hands before eating, and so question Jesus. Jesus responds by quoting the prophet Isaiah and calls them hypocrites. He points out a serious violation of God’s law, with regards to honoring their Father and Mother, in that they are using things that would help their Father and Mother, to observe their own traditions (in effect, cursing their Father and Mother). And they do many things like this.

Pastor / Worship Leader

We give thanks to you, omnipotent, ever living God of truth, eternal Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Worshipers

Creator of heaven and earth, of men, and of all creatures, Sustainer of all things, Giver of all life, order, and wisdom, unfailing Source of help

Pastor / Worship Leader

And to your Son our Lord Jesus Christ, your Word and eternal Image, and to your Holy Spirit

Worshipers

We give thanks to you, O God of holiness, and truth, wisdom and goodness, justice and mercy, purity and loving-kindness.

Pastor / Worship Leader

For with goodness and wisdom unmatched you did reveal yourself to us, sending your Son into the world, destined to assume human nature and to become a sacrifice for us.

Worshipers

We give thanks to you, O God, for gathering your eternal church, for guarding the ministry of your Word, for granting your Holy Spirit, and for giving life everlasting.

Pastor / Worship Leader

To You Lord be all glory, honor, praise, and thanksgiving, forever and ever. Amen.

Worshipers

   Amen!

Opening Prayer / Theme Introduction

Pastor / Worship Leader

Gracious God may your messages and preaching come to us through your Holy Spirit’s power, so that our faith might not rest on the articulation of words by our pastor or the acumen of the human mind, but upon Your power and presence. Help us never to depend upon our own might or power, but always upon Your Spirit. May You, the God of all hope, fill us with all joy and peace as we trust in you, and in your holy Son, the Lord Jesus, Messiah of all people. Amen.

Worshipers

   Amen!

Time of Confession and Forgiveness

[Alternate location:  following Message]

Pastor / Worship Leader

Let us confess our sins, not as frightened servants but as children of the household of God.

Worshipers

Whenever we live like the world, without the faith-optimism of those who have received grace upon grace; Lord have mercy.

Pastor / Worship Leader

Whenever we serve slavishly, forgetting the glorious liberty of those who have been named children of God; Christ have mercy.

Worshipers

Whenever we only laugh sarcastically, mocking human faults instead of participating in the joy of the redeemed; Lord have mercy.

Pastor / Worship Leader

God our Savior-Friend, by the grace of Christ Jesus please bring us to repentance and annul our sins.

Worshipers

And by the infusion of your Spirit help us to recover the joy for which we are created.

Pastor / Worship Leader

With all the enlightened souls on earth and in heaven, we love you all the days of our life, and adore you throughout eternity.

Worshipers

   For your name’s sake. Amen!

…  We Hear God’s Word  …

[Read aloud both the introduction and Scripture]

First Reading         Isaiah 29:11-19

Isaiah prophesied woe to Ariel, the city that David has settled. He prophesies that the Lord will rescue but the prophets, the seers and the people will not understand. The Lord says people’s hearts are far from him; the words from the lips are meaningless. They worship by rules they have been taught- not for praise of God. Despite this, God is merciful and will rescue them. They will hear and see. They will once again rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.

For you this whole vision is nothing but words sealed in a scroll. And if you give the scroll to someone who can read, and say, “Read this, please,” they will answer, “I can’t; it is sealed.” 12 Or if you give the scroll to someone who cannot read, and say, “Read this, please,” they will answer, “I don’t know how to read.” 13 The Lord says: “These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship of me is based on merely human rules they have been taught.14 Therefore once more I will astound these people with wonder upon wonder; the wisdom of the wise will perish, the intelligence of the intelligent will vanish.” 15 Woe to those who go to great depths to hide their plans from the Lord, who do their work in darkness and think, “Who sees us? Who will know?” 16 You turn things upside down, as if the potter were thought to be like the clay! Shall what is formed say to the one who formed it, “You did not make me”? Can the pot say to the potter, “You know nothing”? 17 In a very short time, will not Lebanon be turned into a fertile field and the fertile field seem like a forest?18 In that day the deaf will hear the words of the scroll, and out of gloom and darkness the eyes of the blind will see. 19 Once more the humble will  rejoice in the Lord; the needy will rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.
