Description

John 2:13-22

Jesus saw people selling livestock and exchanging money in the temple.  He made a whip, scattered the coins, and overturned tables.  The Jews asked how Jesus could prove his authority, in which he responded, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.”  It wasn’t until after his resurrection that his disciples recalled this statement and believed.  Many bystanders then and people even now think that Jesus was crazy, and to believe and follow Him is even crazier.   But someday what the world considered foolishness will be proven the wisdom of God.  So, be a fool for Jesus now, because He is coming soon, and the world will know He is the Son of God!

Invocation and Introduction of Today’s Theme

Pastor  We come together and with one voice and proclaim loudly the name above all names!

ALL                  Jesus!

Pastor              The world calls us fools,

ALL                  And fools for Christ we are!

Pastor              But the wisdom of this world is foolishness to Almighty God who holds all wisdom and power and strength.

Opening Prayer

Pastor              As we stand together in your presence Holy God, we close our eyes and tremble at the tremendous glory that surrounds you.  Overwhelmed                              by your greatness, we are in awe of how you, the Sovereign God, can love mere people like us.  We say thank you.

ALL                  Thank you, Father God.

Pastor              In the name of Jesus we pray,

ALL                  Amen.

Time of Greeting

Time of Confession and Forgiveness

[Alternate location:  following Message]

Pastor              We admit that we are sinners, God.

ALL                  We have sinned against you and gone our own foolish ways.

Pastor              You call us to confess, and with unhidden hearts we come clean before you.

ALL                  We confess our sins to you, Father.

Pastor              When we confess, you are faithful and just to forgive us and purify us of all unrighteousness.

ALL                  We desire your truth to be in us.

Pastor              Thank you, Lord, for your mercy.

ALL                  Thank you, Lord, amen.

… We Hear God’s Word …

[Read aloud both the introduction and Scripture]

First Reading                                  Exodus 20:1-17

The Israelites trembled with great fear as they saw the thick darkness, thunder, and lightning, and heard the blast of the trumpet as God spoke the ten commandments to Moses.  These commandments were given to the Israelites as the standard for right living.

And God spoke all these words: “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. “You shall have no other gods before me. “You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments. “You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.“Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore, the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. 12 “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you. 13 “You shall not murder. 14 “You shall not commit adultery. 15 “You shall not steal. 16 “You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. 17 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”
