Description

Hebrews 5:5-10

Two powerful words are found within the passage from Hebrews.  Jesus ‘learned’ obedience, and in so doing, He ‘became’ the Savior.  And Jesus ‘learned’ obedience through suffering.  His suffering made him ‘perfect’, that is, complete – a holy sacrifice through which the world would be redeemed.  Obedience is easy when all goes our way.  Trusting God in all things, no matter how difficult life might be, is the way we ‘learn’ Christ, and become instruments through which His salvation reaches those around us.

Invocation and Introduction of Today’s Theme

Pastor:             Welcome!   We gather as the people or God Who has made us His own, and formed us as His people.

ALL                  He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, Who became our High Priest, offering Himself as sacrifice for us.

Pastor:             We begin in Your name, celebrating who we are in our baptism:

ALL                  In the name of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Opening Prayer

Pastor             Almighty God, we gather as Your people in the name of Your Son, Jesus Christ, Who learned the nature of obedience when He went to the                                 cross, and through Whose sufferings You have offered redemption to the world.  We lift hands and voices before You, processing our love                                   and obedience.  In the name of Jesus Christ, High Priest in the order of Melchizedek, and through His Spirit.

ALL                  Amen.

Time of Greeting

Time of Confession and Forgiveness

[Alternate location:  following Message]

Pastor         We come together to confess our sins, in the name of Jesus, our High Priest

Father, in the days of His flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplication for us (Hebrews 5:6)

Hear our confession for His sake, we pray.

ALL             We confess that we have fallen short of all that You desire.

We confess a discipleship that is half-hearted.

We confess a stewardship that is based on our own comfort.

We confess a refusal to live in obedience to You.

We confess a judgmental spirit toward those around us

We choose the easy way, the wide road, the path of least resistance.

Forgive us, we pray.  In Your holy presence, we are silent and still.

(a brief silence)

Pastor         Hear the Gospel:  “Although Jesus was a Son, He learned obedience through what He suffered. And being made perfect, he became the source                         of eternal salvation to all who obey him” (Hebrews 5:8,9)  He is our High Priest, Who offered Himself as sacrifice for us.  In His death we are                                 forgiven.  In His empty tomb, we are empowered to live in wonder and joy, and are made whole.

ALL                  Amen.

… We Hear God’s Word …

[Read aloud both the introduction and Scripture]

First Reading:  Jeremiah 31:31-34

God proclaims the establishment of a new covenant

31 “The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and with the people of Judah. 32 It will not be like the covenant I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they broke my covenant, though I was a husband to them]” declares the Lord. 33 “This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time,” declares the Lord. “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. 34 No longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’ because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest,” declares the Lord.
“For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.”
