Description

Luke 15:1-10

The Pharisees scoffed at Jesus who dined with sinners, but Jesus didn’t care.  In fact, He illustrated the Father’s relentless love through picture parables.  One parable showed a shepherd leaving behind his flock of 99 to search for the one lost sheep and bring it home.  The other parable told a story of a woman who lost a silver coin only to rejoice with her friends when she found it.  We are all lost without Jesus.  When we repent as sinners, all of Heaven greatly rejoices!

Invocation

Pastor / Worship Leader

   The Lord is merciful!

Worshipers

   He is faithful and strong.

Pastor / Worship Leader

He knows our transgressions, our prior ways, and yet He loves us.

Worshipers

He has mercy on us even though we are undeserving.

Pastor / Worship Leader

Let us be quick to lift up praise to the God of mercy!

Worshipers

   We praise Almighty God!

Opening Prayer / Theme Introduction

Pastor / Worship Leader

Merciful God, full of compassion, we are undeserving of being in Your presence.  You are above all kings, enthroned in majesty, and full of glory, and somehow You tell us to approach Your throne in confidence.  We are not worthy of Your relentless love.  Thank you, Father, for loving us in the trenches, just as we are.  In the name of Your holy begotten Son, Jesus Christ, we pray, Amen.

Worshipers

   Amen.

Time of Confession and Forgiveness

[Alternate location:  following Message]

Pastor / Worship Leader

Lord, we come to You now as sinners ready to confess.

Worshipers

Have mercy on us, O God, according to Your unfailing love.

Pastor / Worship Leader

We confess that we have been sinful from birth and have done what is evil in Your sight.

Worshipers

Have mercy on us, O God, according to Your great compassion.

Pastor / Worship Leader

We ask You to wash away our sin, to cleanse us whiter than snow.

Worshipers

Create in us pure hearts, O God.

Pastor / Worship Leader

We thank you for forgiving us.  It is only because of the propitiation made for our sins by Jesus Christ that we are forgiven and set free from this sin burden.

Worshipers

Renew steadfast spirits within us.  We follow You, Jesus.  Amen.

First Reading                                     Exodus 34:11-24

God warned the Israelites to not make a treaty with the people of the land.  He warned them to only worship Him alone and no other god.

Obey what I command you today. I will drive out before you the Amorites, Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites. 12 Be careful not to make a treaty with those who live in the land where you are going, or they will be a snare among you. 13 Break down their altars, smash their sacred stones and cut down their Asherah poles. 14 Do not worship any other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God. 15 “Be careful not to make a treaty with those who live in the land; for when they prostitute themselves to their gods and sacrifice to them, they will invite you and you will eat their sacrifices. 16 And when you choose some of their daughters as wives for your sons and those daughters prostitute themselves to their gods, they will lead your sons to do the same. 17 “Do not make any idols. 18 “Celebrate the Festival of Unleavened Bread. For seven days eat bread made without yeast, as I commanded you. Do this at the appointed time in the month of Aviv, for in that month you came out of Egypt. 19 “The first offspring of every womb belongs to me, including all the firstborn males of your livestock, whether from herd or flock. 20 Redeem the firstborn donkey with a lamb, but if you do not redeem it, break its neck. Redeem all your firstborn sons. “No one is to appear before me empty-handed. 21 “Six days you shall labor, but on the seventh day you shall rest; even during the plowing season and harvest you must rest. 22 “Celebrate the Festival of Weeks with the firstfruits of the wheat harvest, and the Festival of Ingathering at the turn of the year. 23 Three times a year all your men are to appear before the Sovereign Lord, the God of Israel. 24 I will drive out nations before you and enlarge your territory, and no one will covet your land when you go up three times each year to appear before the Lord your God.
