Description
Luke 13:10-17
Luke presents us with a familiar seen in his gospel – Jesus teaching in the synagogue suddenly pausing to heal a person in the congregation. The Pharisees are flabbergasted by Jesus’ apparent disregard for Sabbath Law prohibiting any kind of work and denounce the healing. Once again, the pious religious leaders miss the forest for the trees, exposing their love of power and control more than compassion and care for the hurting and broken people around them. Jesus’ priority was on showing compassion and giving freedom to a woman imprisoned to her broken body. Here we are shown that while Jesus shatters the religious and social norms, he does what is right and good. The heart of Jesus is this – loving people more than the appearance of righteousness.

Invocation
Pastor It is good to join together to worship Jesus. Let us come with hearts and minds open to
receive the Word of the Lord.
ALL Christ Jesus, we ask you to have your way among us today. Amen!
Opening Prayer / Theme Introduction
Pastor Lord, you see us in our time of need and are always faithful to bestow your mercy and grace in our lives. When we get caught up in the details of appearances, you go straight to the heart and meet us in the mess of our lives. Thank you for seeing us as we really are and loving us completely. Help us to see others with your eyes and be instruments of your love.
ALL Amen!
Time of Confession and Forgiveness
[Alternate location: following Message]
Pastor Holy God, we confess that we have fallen short of the glory that you have called us to.
ALL We have leaned on our own understanding, put our interests first, and have so cut ourselves off from Your guiding Presence, provision, and peace.
Pastor Lord we need you every hour of every day to be in charge of our lives; you are what holds us together and makes sense of our lives.
ALL Thank you for your mercy and faithfulness, Lord Jesus. We praise you and present
our lives to you, asking you to lead us today. Amen.
We Hear God’s Word

First Reading Jeremiah 1:4-10
God’s calling for Jeremiah had nothing to do with his religious pedigree or accomplishments – God called him to be a prophet because He made him to BE a prophet. What God calls us to, He equips us for.
4 Now the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.” 6 Then I said, “Ah, Lord God! Behold, I do not know how to speak, for I am only a youth.” 7 But the Lord said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am only a youth’; for to all to whom I send you, you shall go, and whatever I command you, you shall speak. 8 Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you, declares the Lord.” 9 Then the Lord put out his hand and touched my mouth. And the Lord said to me, “Behold, I have put my words in your mouth. 10 See, I have set you this day over nations and over kingdoms, to pluck up and to break down, to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant.”
