Matthew 5:21-37
In this portion of Scripture, Jesus begins many of his teachings with this phrase: “You have heard that it was said… But I tell you.” Jesus compared the former laws for murder, offerings, adultery, divorce, and oaths to the standard of the new covenant laws of avoiding hatred and anger, keeping relationships right, being faithful to God and avoiding lust, living out marriage commitments, and not speaking empty promises to God. While obeying laws is necessary for an orderly world, a heart that is humble, obedient, and filled with God’s love is essential to the life of a Christian as we bear the mark of Christ and shine His light to the rest of the world.
