Description
Matthew 13:1-9; 18-23
Often on her television show, the famous Judge Judy will remind the plaintiff or defendant in these small claims cases by stating, “God gave you one mouth and two ears for a reason.” She says this to impress upon her hearers that they should be listening much more than speaking. We know that hearing just happens yet it takes concentration and intentionality to actually listen and comprehend what has come to our ears. We have a parable before us with deep meaning and purpose and Jesus wants his hearers to get it. The parable concludes with an important appeal: “let anyone with ears, listen” (13:9). Hearing is quite passive whereas listening points directly at the significance of Jesus’ words so that they illicit a response from the listeners. The response is action, thereby doing God’s will and producing fruit. Lives are changed forever! Praise God!
