Description
Luke 13:10-17
Jesus is teaching in a synagogue on the Sabbath. There is a woman there who has been crippled for eighteen years. Jesus calls her forward and heals her- performs a miracle for all to see! And yet the synagogue leader is indignant, telling the people no work is to be done on the Sabbath. To the delight of the people, Jesus does not back down and points out the blatant hypocrisy of his opponents asking why this woman shouldn’t be set free on the Sabbath.

Pastor / Worship Leader
Heavenly Father, we praise you and we thank you for your Son, Jesus Christ. We praise you and thank you Jesus for your sacrifice, your pain, your suffering on the cross. While we were yet sinners, you died for us. Jesus, you are a God of compassion, a God of miracles, the Great Healer. Lord, help us to take great delight in You, to worship and honor You. Help us to seek the joy that comes from spending time with You. Teach us to rest in You. To keep our eyes on You, Lord. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Amen!
Time of Confession and Forgiveness
[Alternate location: following Message]
Pastor / Worship Leader
Heavenly Father, I confess that I have sinned against you. I have delighted my soul in other things more than I have in you.
Worshipers
In my arrogance, I have enjoyed the comforts of this world
Pastor / Worship Leader
In one moment, I believe that I’m invincible, able to withstand any problem or struggle. In the next moment, I believe that the evil all around me is out to get me.
Worshipers
O God, forgive me of my sin. Look on me with mercy, and give me grace to delight in you, rather than in my sin.
Pastor / Worship Leader
My mouth is full of cursing, deceit, and oppression; under my tongue are mischief and iniquity.
Worshipers
Lift me out of this pit of sin, cleanse me of my unrighteousness, and fill me with your Holy Spirit so that I might walk in holiness and obey your commandments.
Pastor / Worship Leader
Open my lips Lord, and my mouth will declare your praise.
Worshipers
We are saved by the Grace of God! Thank you, Jesus! Amen!
We Hear God’s Word
[Read aloud both the introduction and Scripture]
First Reading Isaiah 58:9b-14
God, through the Prophet Isaiah, speaks of doing away with oppressive behavior and spending time helping the oppressed. The Lord will both provide and reward. And if people will but honor the Lord’s day, the Sabbath, and delight in it, they will find their joy in the Lord.
“If you do away with the yoke of oppression, with the pointing finger and malicious talk, and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday. The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.12 Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins and will raise up the age-old foundations; you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls, Restorer of Streets with Dwellings. 13 “If you keep your feet from breaking the Sabbath and from doing as you please on my holy day, if you call the Sabbath a delight and the Lord’s holy day honorable, and if you honor it by not going your own way and not doing as you please or speaking idle words,14 then you will find your joy in the Lord, and I will cause you to ride in triumph on the heights of the land and to feast on the inheritance of your father Jacob.” For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.
