Description
Mark 4:35-41
Jesus has been traveling throughout. He has been healing, driving out demons, dealing with Pharisees and scribes. He has taught large crowds with parables. And now as evening comes, Jesus and the disciples embark in their boat to the other side of the sea. Jesus is so tired He sleeps during a furious storm. The disciples wake him and seem to demand that He do something. (In Matthew’s account they say, “Lord, save us!”) And when He does, calming the wind and the waves, the disciples are terrified, wondering how even the wind and waves obey Him.

Invocation
Pastor / Worship Leader
I will sing of the Lord’s great love forever; with my mouth, I will make your faithfulness known through all generations.
Worshipers
I will declare that your love stands firm forever, that you have established your faithfulness in heaven itself.
Pastor / Worship Leader
The heavens praise your wonders, Lord, your faithfulness too, in the assembly of the holy ones. For who in the skies above can compare with the Lord? Who is like the Lord among the heavenly beings?
Worshipers
In the council of the holy ones God is greatly feared; he is more awesome than all who surround him. Who is like you, Lord God Almighty? You, Lord, are mighty, and your faithfulness surrounds you.
Pastor / Worship Leader
The heavens are yours, and yours also the earth; you founded the world and all that is in it. You created the north and the south; Your arm is endowed with power; your hand is strong, your right hand exalted.
Worshipers
Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; love and faithfulness go before you. Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you, who walk in the light of your presence, Lord. They rejoice in your name all day long; they celebrate your righteousness. For you are their glory and strength, and by your favor, you exalt our horn.
Pastor / Worship Leader
Praise be to the Lord forever! Amen.
Worshipers
Amen!
Opening Prayer / Theme Introduction
Pastor / Worship Leader
Praise awaits you, our God, to you our vows will be fulfilled. You who answer prayer, to you all people will come. When we were overwhelmed by sins, you forgave our transgressions. Blessed are those you choose and bring near to live in your courts! We are filled with the good things of your house, of your holy temple. You answer us with awesome and righteous deeds, God our Savior, the hope of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest seas, who formed the mountains by your power, having armed yourself with strength, who stilled the roaring of the seas, the roaring of their waves, and the turmoil of the nations. The whole earth is filled with awe at your wonders; where morning dawns, where evening fades, you call forth songs of joy. Amen!
Worshipers
Amen!
Time of Confession and Forgiveness
[Alternate location: following Message]
Pastor / Worship Leader
I, a sinner, confess to my Lord and God and Savior Jesus Christ all the evil I have committed, uttered, or thought.
Worshipers
I have sinned before the Lord by lack of faith and by doubts in the Faith; by lack of gratitude for all his great and never-ending goodness and long-suffering and his care for me, a sinner; by lack of love for God, and lack even of fear; by my refusal to keep God’s commandments.
Pastor / Worship Leader
I have sinned by faithlessness, by little faith, doubting, despair, faint-heartedness, and blasphemous thoughts.
Worshipers
I have sinned in that I have been proud, thought highly of myself; I have been ambitious and vain, I have loved glory and praise, I have been jealous, and I have been a braggart.
Pastor / Worship Leader
I have sinned in word, deed, and thought, in knowledge and in ignorance, wittingly and unwittingly.
Worshipers
Against You, You only have I sinned.
Pastor / Worship Leader
Have mercy on me Lord, a sinner.
Worshipers
Amen!
We Hear God’s Word
[Read aloud both the introduction and Scripture]
First Reading Job 38:1-11
Poor Job, who had suffered terribly from loss and pain, who had listened to his very friends accuse him, who had demanded of God hearings and answers, finally hears from God. The Lord speaks words to Job that must have terrified him, “brace yourself like a man, I will question you and you will answer me.” The Lord then compares the humanness of Job to the sovereignty of God the Creator, the Supreme Being. After a long discourse, Job simply says, “I am unworthy. How can I reply to You?” (40:4)
Then the Lord spoke to Job out of the storm. He said: 2 “Who is this that obscures my plans with words without knowledge? 3 Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me. 4 “Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me if you understand. 5 Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it? 6 On what were its footings set, or who laid its cornerstone—7 while the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy? 8 “Who shut up the sea behind doors when it burst forth from the womb, 9 when I made the clouds its garment and wrapped it in thick darkness, 10 when I fixed limits for it and set its doors and bars in place, 11 when I said, ‘This far you may come and no farther; here is where your proud waves halt’?
