For the last several decades, it has been fashionable for every corporation and congregation to have a Mission Statement. The purpose of a Mission Statement is to help remind a corporation, or a congregation, of why they exist. It seems strange that a congregation should need a Mission Statement when the Church is really nothing other than a Mission organization. We are sent out into the world to bring the message of the Kingdom. It’s difficult work, work that makes us uncomfortable. We go out as lambs in the midst of wolves, and we go lightly, relying on what God provides. It’s not a mission for the faint-hearted, nor would we necessarily choose it, but for those whose hearts have been won by the cross and empty tomb, there is no alternative. We can’t help but share the message of the One Who has redeemed us.
