Description

Luke 9:28-36

At the Transfiguration, Moses and Elijah appeared with Jesus representing a picture of a bridged unity of the Old and New Covenants for Peter, John, and James to see.  But not understanding this, Peter suggested setting up three shelters for them.  Suddenly, a covering cloud enveloped them, and fear struck the men.  A voice spoke, “This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to Him.”  Then, only Jesus was standing there.  Jesus is our High Priest, the only way into Heaven, and the Resurrection and the Life.  He has torn the temple curtain through the sacrifice of His body and the shedding of His blood, and we are to enter into covenant with Him and Him alone.  No longer do we need a mediator, for it is Christ!  He is the head of the Church and one day we will meet Him face to face- hallelujah!

Opening Prayer / Theme Introduction

Pastor / Worship Leader

Holy and awesome Jesus Christ, You are our Great High Priest, the Mediator between God and man.  You bridged the gap that sin created and are the way to the Father.  Because of Your blood sacrifice, You provided for us salvation through the cross.  Old things have passed away, and You have made all things new.  We worship You, only You, Jesus.

Worshipers

   Amen.

Time of Confession and Forgiveness

[Alternate location:  following Message]

Pastor / Worship Leader

Lord Jesus, You alone are worthy of all our attention, yet so many times we become distracted.

Worshipers

We take our eyes off of You, Jesus, and we get sidetracked by the things of this world that tempt us like money, possessions, dreams, titles, and worldly gains.  We forget that this earth is not our permanent home, yet we live like it is.  Forgive us, Jesus.  We have wronged You.

Pastor / Worship Leader

It is not the world that deserves attention; it is only Jesus.  You, Lord, deserve our full allegiance.

Worshipers

We confess of our sins, and we ask for Your forgiveness.

Pastor / Worship Leader

The Lord forgives those who repent and confess; the Lord forgives you.

Worshipers

How great it is to worship a forgiving Savior!  Thank You, Jesus, for this gift of grace and mercy.  We do not receive this gift lightly or in vain, for it is all You, and none of us.

Pastor / Worship Leader

May we lead lives following solely after Jesus with eyes and hearts focused on Him.  Amen.

…  We Hear God’s Word  …

[Read aloud both the introduction and Scripture]

First Reading                                  Deuteronomy 34:1-12

The time came for Moses to die, and the Lord buried Moses.  The next leader would continue the work that the Lord began in Moses, taking the Israelites into the Promised Land.  That leader was Joshua.

Then Moses climbed Mount Nebo from the plains of Moab to the top of Pisgah, across from Jericho. There the Lord showed him the whole land—from Gilead to Dan, all of Naphtali, the territory of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the Mediterranean Sea, the Negev and the whole region from the Valley of Jericho, the City of Palms, as far as Zoar. Then the Lord said to him, “This is the land I promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob when I said, ‘I will give it to your descendants.’ I have let you see it with your eyes, but you will not cross over into it.” And Moses the servant of the Lord died there in Moab, as the Lord had said. He buried him[ in Moab, in the valley opposite Beth Peor, but to this day no one knows where his grave is. Moses was a hundred and twenty years old when he died, yet his eyes were not weak, nor his strength gone. The Israelites grieved for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days, until the time of weeping and mourning was over. Now Joshua’s son of Nun was filled with the spirit of wisdom because Moses had laid his hands on him. So the Israelites listened to him and did what the Lord had commanded Moses. 10 Since then, no prophet has risen in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face, 11 who did all those signs and wonders the Lord sent him to do in Egypt—to Pharaoh and to all his officials and to his whole land. 12 For no one has ever shown the mighty power or performed the awesome deeds that Moses did in the sight of all Israel.
