Description

Luke 9:51-62

Jesus sets out on His final journey to Jerusalem. He knows He will soon suffer and die. He seems to be highly focused and resolute. He is also teaching his disciples and anyone they come across what it really means to follow Him. He uses words that seem shocking. When one man says let me bury my Father first, Jesus says let the dead bury their own dead. When another asks to say goodbye to his family, Jesus says they are unfit for service in the Kingdom of God.

Opening Prayer / Theme Introduction

Pastor / Worship Leader

Heavenly Father, we are to have no other gods before you, no idols. Nothing comes before you. You are to be first in our lives. Jesus, you did not promise us prosperity or anything easy for following you. In fact, you said we would have problems. There is a cost, a price to be paid for following you. Help us to understand this. Show us how to do it. We need your guidance to live the life you would have us live Correct our thoughts, give us the right words, lead our actions. Increase our faith. In Jesus’ Name we pray.

Worshipers

   Amen!

…  We Hear God’s Word  …

[Read aloud both the introduction and Scripture]

First Reading                                  1 Kings 19:15-16, 19-21

The Prophet Elijah is to anoint Elisha to succeed him as prophet. Interestingly, Elisha asks to say goodbye to family first. He is allowed to take care of business first and then he leaves and follows Elijah.

15 The Lord said to him, “Go back the way you came, and go to the Desert of Damascus. When you get there, anoint Hazael king over Aram. 16 Also, anoint Jehu son of Nimshi king over Israel, and anoint Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel Meholah to succeed you as prophet.

19 So Elijah went from there and found Elisha son of Shaphat. He was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen, and he himself was driving the twelfth pair. Elijah went up to him and threw his cloak around him. 20 Elisha then left his oxen and ran after Elijah. “Let me kiss my father and mother goodbye,” he said, “and then I will come with you. ”Go back,” Elijah replied. “What have I done to you?”21 So Elisha left him and went back. He took his yoke of oxen and slaughtered them. He burned the plowing equipment to cook the meat and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he set out to follow Elijah and became his servant.
