The Life-Giving Promise

Matthew 4:12-25

Many of us are comfortable sharing expressions with others such as, “God bless you, God is in control, I’ll be praying for you, or keep the faith.” When we communicate in this way, we are letting the hearer know that we have a belief in God and are doing it in a very low key non-threatening manner. About two millennia ago, Jesus went about the area of Galilee and beyond and spoke these words: “Repent for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” What if we shared those words on a daily basis wherever we went? After all, it is a life-giving promise that people need to hear and embrace. The fact is, most people would probably think we were a bit crazy, yet if they fully understood the promise, they just might stop and listen. The promise encompasses Jesus’ proclamation, teaching, and actions which all point to the life-giving and life-saving promise of Christ. It is this promise that makes us whole.
