Description

Luke 9:51-62

Jesus and His disciples were not accepted in a Samaritan village, so they headed to another village.  Along the way, a couple of men said they would follow Jesus.  One man wanted to bury his father first.  Jesus, who wants total dedication and not half-hearted commitment, knew the motives of this man’s heart.  As you reflect on your own walk with Jesus, what distractions keep you from wholeheartedly following Him?

Invocation

Pastor               Bless the Lord, o my soul, and all that is within me.  The Lord is good!

ALL                  The Lord is merciful and kind.

Pastor               He gives strength to the weary, hope to the hopeless, and is bountiful in good fruit.

ALL                  May we walk with His Spirit.

Opening Prayer / Theme Introduction

   Pastor/Worship Leader speaks

Pastor               Heavenly Father, we dedicate this time to You. We turn off the other things that are

knocking on the doors in our minds.  We focus on Your good character and reflect today

on our own walks with You.  Where we lack, Spirit bring fullness.  Where we flourish,

Spirit bring perseverance.  In the name of Jesus we pray,

All                  Amen!

Time of Confession and Forgiveness

[Alternate location: following Message]

Pastor               Let us confess our sins before the Lord who is faithful and just to forgive us of our

unrighteousness and set our feet on His straight path because He loves us so.

(Allow time for personal prayer and confession)

Pastor               Lord, we choose to follow you wholeheartedly and keep in step with Your Holy Spirit.  We

thank You for your forgiveness and gift of grace from Your Son, Jesus Christ.

ALL                  Amen.

First Reading                                  1 Kings 19:15-16, 19-21

Elijah obeyed the Lord and anointed Elisha as prophet.  Elisha slaughtered his oxen, burned his plowing equipment, and set out to follow Elijah as his servant.

The Lord said to him, “Go back the way you came, and go to the Desert of Damascus. When you get there, anoint Hazael king over Aram. 16 Also, anoint Jehu son of Nimshi king over Israel, and anoint Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel Meholah to succeed you as prophet. So Elijah went from there and found Elisha son of Shaphat. He was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen, and he himself was driving the twelfth pair. Elijah went up to him and threw his cloak around him.

19 So Elijah went from there and found Elisha son of Shaphat. He was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen, and he himself was driving the twelfth pair. Elijah went up to him and threw his cloak around him. 20 Elisha then left his oxen and ran after Elijah. “Let me kiss my father and mother goodbye,” he said, “and then I will come with you.” “Go back,” Elijah replied. “What have I done to you?” 21 So Elisha left him and went back. He took his yoke of oxen and slaughtered them. He burned the plowing equipment to cook the meat and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he set out to follow Elijah and became his servant.
