Description

Matthew 10:40-42

We are ambassadors of Christ and carry His Holy Spirit in us.  When we are welcomed by others, Christ is welcomed, and thus the Father is also welcomed.  Our countenance must reflect the character of our Lord. Even the tiniest acts of kindness- like a cold cup of water to a thirsty child- the Lord sees and rewards.

Invocation

Pastor / Worship Leader

We call upon the Triune God and ask Him to bless this service.

Worshipers

We call on the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Pastor / Worship Leader

We call on the name of the Lord and deny any other name that sets itself up against God Almighty.

Worshipers

We call on Jesus and follow Him wholeheartedly.

Opening Prayer / Theme Introduction

Pastor / Worship Leader

Jesus Christ, we confess You as our Lord and Savior.  There is no other God that measures up or compares to You.  Through You, we have grace, and in reverence we lay down our lives just as You did for us and take up our cross to follow You.  Lord, we are Your followers.  Teach us to obey, listen, and love others.

Worshipers

In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Spirit we pray, amen.

Time of Confession and Forgiveness

[Alternate location:  following Message]

Pastor / Worship Leader

We must deny ourselves to follow Jesus.  We must pick up our crosses and follow Him.

Worshipers

To deny ourselves requires that we obey Jesus’ commands.  We confess that sin stops us from obeying.  We confess that we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves.  In thought and in action we have failed to obey and love God and one another.  Forgive us, Lord Jesus.

Pastor / Worship Leader

Forgive us; renew in us a right spirit.  Have mercy on us and lead us by the Holy Spirit.

Worshipers

May we delight in Your will and walk humbly with You, God.  To the glory of Your awesome name we pray, Amen.

…  We Hear God’s Word  …

[Read aloud both the introduction and Scripture]

First Reading                                  Jeremiah 28:5-9

Hananiah claimed divine authority to his false authority.  But Jeremiah recognized the falsehood and stressed that the prophesies of peace pointing toward repentance come from the Lord.

Then the prophet Jeremiah replied to the prophet Hananiah before the priests and all the people who were standing in the house of the Lord. He said, “Amen! May the Lord do so! May the Lord fulfill the words you have prophesied by bringing the articles of the Lord’s house and all the exiles back to this place from Babylon. Nevertheless, listen to what I have to say in your hearing and in the hearing of all the people: From early times the prophets who preceded you and me have prophesied war, disaster and plague against many countries and great kingdoms. But the prophet who prophesies peace will be recognized as one truly sent by the Lord only if his prediction comes true.”
