Description

Mark 10:35-45

When James and John asked to be seated next to Him in Heaven, Jesus explained to the disciples that in order to become great, they first had to become servants just as He came to give up His life as a ransom.  We often forget that the Christian life is about serving others and not ourselves.  Let’s not spend our temporary lives gaining the whole world and neglecting our true calling of giving our lives away for the sake of the eternal Kingdom of God.

Invocation

Pastor               The Lord is our protector and defender!

ALL                  He has shown us His salvation through Jesus Christ!

Pastor               Jesus took upon Himself our pain, suffering, transgressions, and iniquities for the sake of our peace.

ALL                  Oh how He loves us!

Opening Prayer / Theme Introduction

Pastor               Lord, as we learn and read and worship together, teach us Your ways.  Because we have access to Your holy Scriptures, we can gather knowledge, but it takes Your                            Spirit to bring understanding and revelation.  As Your disciples, we want to follow You well and  continue Your holy work as Your servants.  Give us wisdom to see                               things like You do.

 ALL                 In Jesus’ name, amen!

Time of Confession and Forgiveness

[Alternate location:  following Message]

Pastor               Jesus, we are humbled by your great sacrifice on the cross as you were led like a lamb to to the slaughter.

ALL                  But we like stray sheep wander off in our own ways and get lost in sin.  Call us home, Great Shepherd!

Pastor               You are the forever High Priest ordained by God.  We confess of our sin to You now.

ALL                  We confess of all areas in our hearts that lead us astray from our source of  wholeness- life in Christ.  Forgive us, Lord!

Pastor               Hear us, Lord.  We accept your forgiveness.

ALL                  Thank you for your sacrifice on the cross that washed our sins white as snow.

Pastor               We love you, Jesus.  We want to follow you.  Amen.

First Reading                                  Isaiah 53:4-12

This prophecy was written years before Jesus fulfilled the words of the Lord.  He was the unblemished lamb led to the slaughter to be slain for the sins of the world.  It is only because of Jesus Christ’s sacrifice that we can be delivered from sin.

Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth. By oppression and judgment he was taken away. Yet who of his generation protested? For he was cut off from the land of the living; for the transgression of my people he was punished. He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death, though he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth. 10 Yet it was the Lord’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer and though the Lord makes his life an offering for sin, he will see his offspring and prolong his days, and the will of the Lord will prosper in his hand.11 After he has suffered, he will see the light of life and be satisfied; by his knowledge my righteous servant will justify many, and he will bear their iniquities. 12 Therefore I will give him a portion among the great, and he will divide the spoils with the strong because he poured out his life unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors. For he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.
