Description
Mark 5:21-43
Jesus continues to be followed by large crowds. He has been performing miracles and teaching in parables. He stunned the disciples by calming the raging seas of Galilee. He has driven out a demon from a possessed man (Legion). And now two more miracles: A woman who has been bleeding for twelve years, with great effort, simply touches Jesus’ cloak, and is healed. A synagogue leader named Jairus has a twelve year old daughter who has died. Jesus raises her from the dead. In both miracles, the faith of the woman and the faith of Jairus are clearly seen. Jesus makes two interesting statements, “Your faith has healed you.” and “Don’t be afraid, just believe.”

Invocation
Pastor / Worship Leader
Lord, we come before your throne of grace not trusting in ourselves but in your marvelous and gracious love as it seeks expression among us.
Worshipers
May we listen for your still, small voice as it speaks to us today and as it boldly proclaims the undeniable reality of your love that will not let us go.
Pastor / Worship Leader
Stir our hearts and our imaginations that we may see beyond appearances of what is to the reality of what can be.
Worshipers
Let us rise and meet our Creator. Let us raise our hands and voices in acknowledgment that God’s Holy Spirit moves among us, calling us to new life in Christ.
Pastor / Worship Leader
Let us raise our eyes, knowing that this new life of stewardship for all God’s creation is seen in the life of Jesus the Christ, our Lord and Savior.
Worshipers
Lord, into your most holy presence we now come. Calm our anxious spirits. Remove the distractions that would keep us from you here today. Break down the walls of separation that we have built to keep you from our hardened hearts. Lead us in joy and celebration of the only reality worth knowing, that you love us as we are. Free us for joyful obedience to your claim and call on our lives this day and every day.
Pastor / Worship Leader
Praise be to the Lord forever! Amen.
Worshipers
Amen!
Opening Prayer / Theme Introduction
Pastor / Worship Leader
Jesus, we praise you and we thank you for the gift of faith and we ask you for the faith of the woman who touched your garment, knowing she would be healed. We ask you for the faith of the man whose daughter was ill, the faith that absolutely knew you would heal his daughter. Lord, at times it can seem that you are distant. We believe that you are God, all-powerful and almighty. And yet Lord, you want us to come to You, to seek, to ask. We believe, Lord, that you will hear our prayer if we earnestly ask you with a sincere heart. We hope in your goodness and mercy, and we offer you our love even if it is paltry in comparison to yours, for you are the wellspring of love and goodness itself. In Your Holy Name, Amen.
Worshipers
Amen!
Time of Confession and Forgiveness
[Alternate location: following Message]
Pastor / Worship Leader
God is light; in him there in no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him, yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth.
Worshipers
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from sin. If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.
Pastor / Worship Leader
Most holy and merciful Father, We confess to you and to one another, that we have sinned against you by what we have done, and by what we have left undone.
Worshipers
We have not loved you with our whole heart and mind and strength. We have not fully loved our neighbors as ourselves. We have not always had in us the mind of Christ.
Pastor / Worship Leader
You alone know how often we have grieved you by wasting your gifts, by wandering from your ways.
Worshipers
We confess our weakness of faith, our lack of trust in you, our tendency to rely on ourselves instead of coming to You.
Pastor / Worship Leader
Forgive us, we pray you, most merciful Father; And free us from our sin.
Worshipers
Renew in us the grace and strength of your Holy Spirit, for the sake of Jesus Christ your Son our Savior. Amen.

First Reading Lamentations 3:22-33
The Prophet Jeremiah is most likely the author of Lamentations. And in this book, he tells of the destruction of Jerusalem and the wholesale devastation of kings, priests and commoners alike. It is understood that this destruction, by the Babylonians, is indeed the Divine judgement of God. It is God himself, who has brought this on. But in the middle of the book, Jeremiah focuses on the goodness of God, his love and his compassion. It is good to seek God. It is good to wait for salvation. There is hope. God’s love is unfailing.
Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. 23 They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. 24 I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.” 25 The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; 26 it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord. 27 It is good for a man to bear the yoke while he is young. 28 Let him sit alone in silence, for the Lord has laid it on him. 29 Let him bury his face in the dust— there may yet be hope. 30 Let him offer his cheek to one who would strike him, and let him be filled with disgrace. 31 For no one is cast off by the Lord forever. 32 Though he brings grief, he will show compassion, so great is his unfailing love. 33 For he does not willingly bring affliction or grief to anyone.
