Description

John 4:5-26 (27-30, 39-42)

At a Samaritan well, Jesus waited for a specific woman who desperately needed transformation.  Stereotypical labels and her promiscuous lifestyle plagued her reputation, but Jesus didn’t let the social boundaries stop him from invading light into her dark life.  He told her about living water, uncovered the truth about her multiple husbands, and revealed himself to her as the Messiah saying, “I am He.”  In shock, the woman spread the word to her town, and many Samaritans listened to Jesus and believed.

Opening Prayer / Theme Introduction

Pastor / Worship Leader

Giver of Life, we are thirsty for Your Living Water.  We are reminded today that the eternal life offered to us through Jesus is a loving blessing.  We thank the Holy Spirit who never leaves us alone to fend for ourselves. We open our hearts to You, God.  We ask You to soften our hearts to receive all that You have for us today.

Worshipers

In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.

Time of Confession and Forgiveness

[Alternate location:  following Message]

Pastor / Worship Leader

The woman at the well had hidden sin tucked away, or so she thought.  But when our Lord met her at the well, he gently and truthfully spoke of her secrets to reveal to her that He was the Messiah.  Hidden sin is a trap.  The enemy comes only to destroy us, and he often does so through promoting secrets in our lives.  Jesus came to give us life and freedom.  Today as we enter into confession, I encourage you to confess those hidden sins to the gentle and loving Savior, Jesus.  I invite you to allow Him into that secret area of your life so he can forgive you and release you from the entanglement of that sin.  When the enemy says, “Shame on you,” Jesus loudly shatters the enemy’s lies with the words, “Shame off you!”

Worshipers

Jesus, meet me in my sin and forgive me, I ask.

…  We Hear God’s Word  …

[Read aloud both the introduction and Scripture]

First Reading                                         Exodus 17:1-7

The grumbling Israelites were thirsty for water, but there was none to be found in the dry desert.  Moses prayed to God who provided water from a rock.

All the congregation of the people of Israel moved on from the wilderness of Sin by stages, according to the commandment of the Lord, and camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink. Therefore the people quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water to drink.” And Moses said to them, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test the Lord?” But the people thirsted there for water, and the people grumbled against Moses and said, “Why did you bring us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?” So Moses cried to the Lord, “What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready to stone me.” And the Lord said to Moses, “Pass on before the people, taking with you some of the elders of Israel, and take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb, and you shall strike the rock, and water shall come out of it, and the people will drink.” And Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel. And he called the name of the place Massah and Meribah, because of the quarreling of the people of Israel, and because they tested the Lord by saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”
