1 Samuel 24:1-7, Matthew 4:1-11

Every adventure story reaches a point of crisis.  There is a stream to be crossed, a cliff to be scaled, and enemy to be conquered.  David faced his testing in a cave in the wilderness, as he had opportunity to end the life of Saul.  David refused to take matters into his own hand, and continued to live dependently upon the grace and providence of God.  Jesus faced His test in a wilderness as well – a test that took its highest form on a cross.  He refused to take matters into His own holy hands, and surrendered to the will of His father.  Our test is the same.  We are always presented with opportunities to take things into our own hands, to make things happen, to exert our own determination.  And God calls us to simply surrender to Him.
