Description

John 8:31-36

Sin entangles us and keeps us in bondage like slaves.  Jesus has come to set us free from sin and to welcome us into His eternal family as sons and daughters.  On this Reformation Sunday, let us remember that the Truth sets us free.  This truth is that faith alone in Jesus Christ is the gateway to Heaven.  No good deed or religious act can accomplish salvation.

Invocation

Pastor               Welcome to this space where we gather to celebrate the freedom that we find only in Jesus Christ!

ALL                  We are glad to be here on this Reformation Sunday.

Pastor               We glorify your name, Jesus!

ALL                  Amen!

Opening Prayer / Theme Introduction

Pastor               God in Heaven, Lord above all the earth, we love and praise You.  You keep Your covenant promises forever.  You remain faithful and true to Your people.  No                                         amount of work that we accomplish can gain us eternal life.  It is only by Your Son, Jesus, that we have received an eternal place in Heaven.

ALL                  We open our hearts to You, Covenant Keeper.   It is by faith we believe.

Pastor               And it is by faith alone that we enter into Your family.  We offer ourselves to you as living sacrifices as we worship today.

ALL                  Amen.

Time of Confession and Forgiveness

[Alternate location:  following Message]

Pastor               Who can measure up to the Law?  No one is righteous, not even one.

ALL                  For all have sinned and fallen short of God’s glory.

Pastor               Who can be saved from sin?

ALL                  Anyone who believes in Jesus Christ, God’s begotten Son.  We are justified by His grace.

Pastor               By Christ’s shed blood, we have been made clean.

ALL                  We are freely forgiven by the blood of Jesus Christ!  Awesome is this selfless act act of love.  Awesome is our God!

Pastor               Jesus, thank you for gifting us with forgiveness and eternal life.  We cannot thank you enough.  Give us the mercy and grace to extend this same forgiveness to                                       others.  In the beautiful name of Jesus we pray,

ALL                  Amen.

First Reading                                  Jeremiah 31:31-34

God promised a new covenant with His people unlike the covenant broken by the Israelites who were led out of Egypt.  This covenant would be written on their very hearts and would declare sins forgiven and forgotten.

“The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel
and with the people of Judah. 32 It will not be like the covenant I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they broke my covenant, though I was a husband to them,” declares the Lord. 33 “This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time,” declares the Lord. “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. 34 No longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’ because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest,” declares the Lord. “For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.”
