Description

Luke 23:1-49

Only 33 years prior had Jesus arrived as a swaddled baby to his earthly parents, Mary and Joseph. But the day of Jesus’ crucifixion was here. The religious leaders falsely accused Him, Pilate found no fault in Him, Herod mocked Him, and the soldiers crucified Him while everyone watched the bleeding King of the Jews hang limp on the cross.  In His last breath, Jesus gave up His Spirit to the Father. The earth mourned as evil rejoiced.  But this is not the end of the story, for in just three days, the words spoken by Jesus and the prophets would come to pass.  The darkness would bow to the light of Christ as His miraculous resurrection was near!

Invocation

Pastor               Welcome friends, family, brothers and sisters in Christ.

ALL                  It’s great to be gathered together as the Church of Christ!

Pastor               Today we celebrate the Lord’s death.  Yes, this is a celebration, because we know that what comes next is His glorious resurrection!

ALL                  Yes, amen!

Opening Prayer / Theme Introduction

   Pastor/Worship Leader speaks

Pastor               Lord God in Heaven, the necessary death of Your Son, Jesus Christ, is why we can

approach Your throne in Heaven.  There is only one way to You, Lord, and it’s through

Jesus.  Today as we celebrate His death, let us hold dear in our hearts the good news of

His resurrection.  Let us die to our own ways and live truly in the life You have provided

for us.  Keep our minds from distractions and help us to focus on You.

ALL                In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

Time of Confession and Forgiveness

[Alternate location:  following Message]

Pastor             Brothers and sisters, in 2 Timothy 2:19 we read, “Nevertheless, God’s solid foundation

stands firm, sealed with this inscription: ‘The Lord knows those who are his,’ and,

‘Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness.’”

The ideas and philosophies of this world steer us away from the truth revealed in Christ.

Therefore, we must turn away from wickedness and turn toward God.  Let us take time

to ask the Lord to reveal to us our sin so that we may confess and be forgiven by Jesus.

(Allow time for personal reflection and prayer)

Pastor               Holy Spirit, we trust Your conviction and guiding.

ALL                  We accept the forgiveness of Christ.

Pastor               Thank you, Lord.  We pray in the name of Jesus- the name above all other names.

ALL                  Amen.

…  We Hear God’s Word  …

[Read aloud both the introduction and Scripture]

First Reading                                  Deuteronomy 32:36-39

The words of the Lord through Moses remind Israel that He is all powerful

and that worship of false gods yields nothing.

36 The Lord will vindicate his people and relent concerning his servants when he sees their strength is gone and no one is left, slave or free.  37 He will say: “Now where are their gods, the rock they took refuge in, 38 the gods who ate the fat of their sacrifices and drank the wine of their drink offerings? Let them rise up to help you! Let them give you shelter! 39 “See now that I myself am he! There is no god besides me. I put to death and I bring to life, I have wounded and I will heal, and no one can deliver out of my
