Description
Mark 1:21-28
It is easy to forget that evil is all around us. In this dramatic story, Jesus encounters a most heinous evil in a spirit that has possessed a man. Those in attendance at this worship service are now given a front row seat to the power and authority that Jesus possesses. This authority was prophesied in Deuteronomy and now personified in Christ. This gives us comfort and peace to know that the very Word of God has power to deliver and save us.

Invocation and Introduction of Today’s Theme
Pastor Lord, we begin this service in prayer and praise and adoration of You.
ALL Come Father, come Son, come Holy Spirit.
Pastor Evil is all around us and we need You at our side.
ALL Come Father, come Son, come Holy Spirit.
Pastor At Your word, evil must flee. We know Your power to be mighty and Your love to be great.
ALL Come Father, come Son, come Holy Spirit.
Pastor We know that Jesus had come to destroy the work of the devil and has given us His authority to speak Your word so that the enemy must leave.
ALL Come Father, come Son, come Holy Spirit.
Reading of the Psalm 111:1-10
Pastor Praise the LORD. I will extol the LORD with all my heart in the council of the upright and in the assembly. Great are the works of the LORD; they are pondered by all who delight in them. Glorious and majestic are his deeds, and his righteousness endures forever. He has caused his wonders to be remembered; the LORD is gracious and compassionate. He provides food for those who fear him; he remembers his covenant forever. He has shown his people the power of his works, giving them the lands of other nations. The works of his hands are faithful and just; all his precepts are trustworthy. They are steadfast forever and ever, done in faithfulness and uprightness. He provided redemption for his people; he ordained his covenant forever– holy and awesome is his name. The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow his precepts have good understanding. To him belongs eternal praise.
Time of Greeting
Time of Confession and Forgiveness
[Alternate location: following Message]
Pastor Lord, we have not always loved Your word and we have often forgotten Your glorious deeds.
ALL Forgive us, Lord.
Pastor We have not remembered Your salvation that You have given to us and we have often forsaken the assembly of Your people.
ALL Forgive us, Lord.
Pastor We all carry burdens and sins, Lord, and You know them all. We lay them before You in silent prayer as we seek Your mercy, because of Jesus our Lord.
ALL Forgive us, Lord.
Pastor The evil is also in us, Lord. Drive it far from us so that we may enjoy Your presence.
(pause for silent reflection)
Pastor Upon this, your confession, I, by virtue of my office and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ, announce to you the forgiveness of sins. May the salvation of God deliver us all!
We Hear God’s Word
[Read aloud both the introduction and Scripture]
First Reading: Deuteronomy 18:15-20
The LORD has promised that a prophet would come who would speak with authority. He will speak only what God tells him to speak. This is a glorious promise of Jesus who comes to not only speak the word of God, but to be the very Word of God.
15 The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your fellow Israelites. You must listen to him. 16 For this is what you asked of the Lord your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said, “Let us not hear the voice of the Lord our God nor see this great fire anymore, or we will die.” 17 The Lord said to me: “What they say is good. 18 I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their fellow Israelites, and I will put my words in his mouth. He will tell them everything I command him. 19 I myself will call to account anyone who does not listen to my words that the prophet speaks in my name. 20 But a prophet who presumes to speak in my name anything I have not commanded, or a prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, is to be put to death.”
