Description

Luke 4:1-13

For forty days, the Lord Jesus Christ was tempted by Satan in the wilderness.  Three times Satan tried to lure Jesus into a sinful trap, but Jesus responded with what was written in Scripture.  Satan tries to tempt Christians today.  It is vital that we, like Christ, be rooted in the Word of God, fully devoted to Him, and ready to combat spiritual warfare in the strength of the Holy Spirit and not our own.

Invocation

Pastor               Come one, come all, come everyone and worship the Lord!

ALL                  Here we are together at last bringing our offering of worship to the Lord.

Pastor               He is worthy!

ALL                  He is worthy!

Opening Prayer / Theme Introduction

   Pastor/Worship Leader speaks

Pastor               The heavens declare the glory of God, and Lord, we join in the worship of the angels, the

praises of the elders, and the cries of Your creation and say

ALL                  Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty who was and is and is to come.

Pastor               We pause in reflection and honor of who You are.  We bow before Your holy name.

ALL                  Your name is the name above all names.  There is no one like You, God.

Pastor               On You, O Spirit, we rely to equip us for the times we wander in the wilderness and are

tempted by the enemy.  Fill us today, Lord.  In Your name we pray, Jesus,

ALL                  Amen!

Time of Confession and Forgiveness

[Alternate location:  following Message]

Pastor               The Lord has equipped His Saints with His armor and His very Spirit.

ALL                  Then why do we rely on our own strength and go our own way?  Forgive us, Lord.

Pastor               The Lord is our strong defender and our strong tower.

ALL                  Then why do we let fear creep in and dictate our lives?  Forgive us, Lord.

Pastor               The Lord is good and has forgiven us through the shed blood of Jesus Christ.

ALL                  We accept Your salvation and confess that we believe that Jesus Christ is Lord.

Your mercies are new every  morning!  Amen.

…  We Hear God’s Word  …

[Read aloud both the introduction and Scripture]

First Reading                                  Deuteronomy 26:1-11

The Israelites would soon enter the Promised Land as the Lord promised and were commanded by Him to take some of the firstfruits of their produce and

present it to the Lord for an offering.

When you have entered the land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance and have taken possession of it and settled in it, take some of the firstfruits of all that you produce from the soil of the land the Lord your God is giving you and put them in a basket. Then go to the place the Lord your God will choose as a dwelling for his Name and say to the priest in office at the time, “I declare today to the Lord your God that I have come to the land the Lord swore to our ancestors to give us.” The priest shall take the basket from your hands and set it down in front of the altar of the Lord your God. Then you shall declare before the Lord your God: “My father was a wandering Aramean, and he went down into Egypt with a few people and lived there and became a great nation, powerful and numerous. But the Egyptians mistreated us and made us suffer, subjecting us to harsh labor. Then we cried out to the Lord, the God of our ancestors, and the Lord heard our voice and saw our misery, toil and oppression. So the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, with great terror and with signs and wonders. He brought us to this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey; 10 and now I bring the firstfruits of the soil that you, Lord, have given me.” Place the basket before the Lord your God and bow down before him. 11 Then you and the Levites and the foreigners residing among you shall rejoice in all the good things the Lord your God has given to you and your household.
