Description
Mark 10:17-31
A rich man asked Jesus what he had to do to inherit eternal life, in which Jesus answered to sell everything and give the money to the poor. Was Jesus commanding this man to obey a certain rule or did He see straight to the grip that wealth had on this rich man’s life? Giving all of yourself away to follow Jesus and to serve others will be the hardest yet rewarding thing you’ve ever done. Will you do it?

Invocation
Pastor When you woke up this morning, did you praise the Lord? Let’s rejoice in this new day, for the Lord granted us another breath to continue His work. We praise you, Lord!
ALL We praise the Lord for this day. We thank you, Lord, for your grace as we gather together in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen!
Opening Prayer / Theme Introduction
Pastor Father, it is for your glory that we worship you today. We are grateful for your Son, His selfless act of kindness on the cross, and for the Holy Spirit who resides in us and leads us to Your throne. How good you are, Lord. Sanctify us through and through. Teach us Your way of servant hood and may we give our lives away for the sake of your name.
ALL In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
Time of Confession and Forgiveness
[Alternate location: following Message]
Pastor Greed, selfishness, pride, envy all chant, “Me! Me! Me!” But You, Jesus, taught us to give freely of ourselves as a sacrifice of love just as You did.
ALL But, we fail daily to live up to your standards.
Pastor In fact, all of us fall short of Your glory.
ALL Savior Jesus! We need Your forgiveness!
Pastor It is only by the stripes on your back, the blood shed for us, and Your powerful resurrection that we are healed and made whole and forgiven. So, we approach God’s throne of grace and ask for mercy.
ALL You pour out your mercy and grace on us because of Jesus!
Pastor Thank you, Lord, for Your true forgiveness. Help us to forgive others in the same way.
ALL Amen.
We Hear God’s Word
[Read aloud both the introduction and Scripture]
First Reading Amos 5:6-7, 10-15
The world was full of evil and unjust acts against the poor. Seek the Lord and His goodness in times of evil.
Seek the Lord and live, or he will sweep through the tribes of Joseph like a fire; it will devour them, and Bethel will have no one to quench it. 7 There are those who turn justice into bitterness and cast righteousness to the ground.
10 There are those who hate the one who upholds justice in court and detest the one who tells the truth. 11 You levy a straw tax on the poor and impose a tax on their grain Therefore, though you have built stone mansions, you will not live in them; though you have planted lush vineyards, you will not drink their wine. 12 For I know how many are your offenses and how great your sins. There are those who oppress the innocent and take bribes and deprive the poor of justice in the courts. 13 Therefore the prudent keep quiet in such times, for the times are evil. 14 Seek good, not evil, that you may live. Then the Lord God Almighty will be with you, just as you say he is. 15 Hate evil, love good; maintain justice in the courts.
Perhaps the Lord God Almighty will have mercy on the remnant of Joseph.
