Description

Luke 18:9-14

Jesus, while on the road to Jerusalem, continues His teaching of the disciples. In this parable Jesus seems to speak directly to those who consider themselves righteous, perhaps the Pharisees. He tells the story of a Pharisee and a tax collector praying. One has words of arrogance and another words of humility. Later Jesus states the Kingdom of God belongs to those who are like children.

Opening Prayer / Theme Introduction

Pastor / Worship Leader

Jesus, We come to You, our Savior, humbly in prayer. We are thankful and in awe of what You have done for us. Your sacrifice. Your pain. Your life here on earth. We cannot fully understand Your grace, love, or forgiveness. Heavenly Father, sending Your only begotten Son to die for us should have us on our knees daily. Help us to do this. Draw us closer to you. Show us how to lift our faces to You in humble adoration. We pray in Your Holy Name. Amen!

Worshipers

   Amen!

Time of Confession and Forgiveness

[Alternate location:  following Message]

Pastor / Worship Leader

 Lord, we confess our sins.

Worshipers

We confess the sin of pride, the sin of believing we are righteous by our own actions, our own works.

Pastor / Worship Leader

We confess that we love and even prefer the praise of humans to that of You.

Worshipers

We confess that our instinct is to trust in ourselves first, and then, You.

Pastor / Worship Leader

I confess that I am more concerned with my will, vice Your will.

Worshipers

Come quickly to help me, my Lord and my Savior.

Pastor / Worship Leader

Have mercy on me Lord, a sinner.

Worshipers

   Amen!

…  We Hear God’s Word  …

[Read aloud both the introduction and Scripture]

First Reading                                  Jeremiah 14:7-10, 19-22

Jeremiah confesses the collective sin of the people and asks the Lord to act,  then confesses to God that he’s their only hope and savior.

Although our sins testify against us, do something, Lord, for the sake of your name. For we have often rebelled; we have sinned against you. You who are the hope of Israel, its Savior in times of distress, why are you like a stranger in the land, like a traveler who stays only a night? Why are you like a man taken by surprise, like a warrior powerless to save? You are among us, Lord, and we bear your name; do not forsake us! 10 This is what the Lord says about this people: “They greatly love to wander; they do not restrain their feet. So the Lord does not accept them; he will now remember their wickedness  and punish them for their sins.”

19 Have you rejected Judah completely? Do you despise Zion? Why have you afflicted us so that we cannot be healed? We hoped for peace but no good has come, for a time of healing but there is only terror. 20 We acknowledge our wickedness, Lord, and the guilt of our ancestors; we have indeed sinned against you. 21 For the sake of your name do not despise us; do not dishonor your glorious throne. Remember your covenant with us and do not break it. 22 Do any of the worthless idols of the nations bring rain? Do the skies themselves send down showers? No, it is you, Lord our God. Therefore our hope is in you, for you are the one who does all this.
