Description

Mark 6:30-34, 53-56

Having ministered often, the apostles and Jesus withdrew to a quiet place.  However, when they saw the lost people of the crowds following them, they had compassion on them and healed many.  Doing the Lord’s work can be wearisome, but drawing on His strength produces miraculous power!

Invocation

Pastor               How wonderful it is to have the Lord as our Great Shepherd.

ALL                  We are the sheep of His pasture.

Pastor               He leads us and refreshes our souls.

ALL                  Guide us, Lord.

Opening Prayer / Theme Introduction

Pastor              Father, your goodness and love follow us all the days of our lives.  Your compassion for

us never fails.  You are with us and you comfort us.  As we follow you, give us the eyes to

see the world as you see it.  In your name, Jesus, we pray,

ALL                  Amen.

Time of Confession and Forgiveness

[Alternate location:  following Message]

Pastor               We come to your throne with confidence only because of Jesus Christ.  We confess…

ALL                  of overfilling our lives with tedious tasks and neglecting our relationship with You.

Pastor               We admit…

ALL                  that we don’t rest as you’ve commanded and end up running our lives on empty.

Pastor               We lack…

ALL                  compassion to serve, give, and love as you did.

Pastor               Forgive us, Lord!  We need your grace.

ALL                  Forgiven we are because of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross.  Give us

strength to chase after you rather than the whims of the world.

Pastor               Jesus, it’s in your name we pray, Amen.

[Read aloud both the introduction and Scripture]

First Reading                                  Jeremiah 23:1-6

God compares Israel to sheep in His pasture.  He promises to gather a remnant of His flock and return them to their pasture as shepherds have led them astray.

“Woe to the shepherds who are destroying and scattering the sheep of my pasture!” declares the Lord. Therefore this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says to the shepherds who tend my people: “Because you have scattered my flock and driven them away and have not bestowed care on them, I will bestow punishment on you for the evil you have done,” declares the Lord. “I myself will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the countries where I have driven them and will bring them back to their pasture, where they will be fruitful and increase in number. I will place shepherds over them who will tend them, and they will no longer be afraid or terrified, nor will any be missing,” declares the Lord. “The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, a King who will reign wisely and do what is just and right in the land. In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safe. This is the name by which he will be called: The Lord Our Righteous Savior.
