Description

Mark 15:1-47

Pilate questioned His authority.  The soldiers mocked His claimed identity.  He was gruesomely crucified, and Jesus Christ, King of the Jews, died and was buried in a tomb.  Jesus spoke often about His coming death to His disciples.  He told them that it was the Father’s will so that men could receive eternal life.  But, when the actual events occurred, and Jesus was proclaimed dead, would they remember that Jesus would be raised to life?  Christ’s death is the beginning of true life. This Palm Sunday, remember the sacrificial death of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and rejoice! For we know what’s coming next- the miraculous resurrection!

Invocation and Introduction of Today’s Theme

Pastor              Welcome!

ALL                  We are glad to be in the presence of the Lord!

Pastor             Today we remember the sacrifice of our Savior, Jesus Christ, pausing at His suffering

and rejoicing in our redemption and adoption as sons and daughters in the Kingdom.

ALL                  Jesus made the way for us.

Opening Prayer

Pastor            Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, how sweet is the sound of your name to our ears.  We are shaken by all that you’ve done for us on the cross.  You suffered                            so much for the sake of us.  We are overwhelmed by your love.  Open wide our hearts and pour out your Spirit on us.

ALL                In Jesus’ name, amen.

Time of Confession and Forgiveness

[Alternate location:  following Message]

Pastor            Oh how you love us, and we scratch our heads and wonder why!

ALL                 In our sin, we mock you, spit on you, deny you, and walk away from you.

Pastor            Yet you pursue us, show us kindness, defend us, and love us even to the point of death.

ALL                 You don’t forsake us; you love us.  You don’t shun us; forgive us.

Pastor            We are forgiven by the blood of Jesus!

ALL                 We are forgiven- Amen!

[Read aloud both the introduction and Scripture]

First Reading                                  Zechariah 9:9-12

Rejoice, Daughter of Zion, for the King is coming! He will come as a servant, but will bring peace and rule to the nations.

Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. 10 I will take away the chariots from Ephraim and the warhorses from Jerusalem, and the battle bow will be broken. He will proclaim peace to the nations. His rule will extend from sea to sea and from the River to the ends of the earth.
11 As for you, because of the blood of my covenant with you, I will free your prisoners from the waterless pit. 12 Return to your fortress, you prisoners of hope; even now I announce that I will restore twice as much to you.
