Description

Mark 1:21-28

To the human eye, Jesus didn’t possess any earthly authority- He was just a carpenter’s son from Nazareth.  However, Jesus taught with authority, performed miracles, and rebuked and casted out impure spirits proving His identity and God-given authority as the Holy One of God.

Opening Prayer / Theme Introduction

Pastor / Worship Leader

Gracious and compassionate Lord, You remember Your covenant with Your people.  You have not forsaken us, and You will not forget us.  We look to our Savior, Lord Jesus Christ, as our Covenant Keeper.  He is perfect in power and the author and perfector of our faith.  We are reminded today of the supreme authority of Christ that works miracles in our lives and rids us of evil.  We follow Jesus into His light as He is the only way to the Father.  We proclaim in one accord…

Worshipers

Jesus is our authority.  Jesus is our Lord.  In the name of Jesus, Amen.

Time of Confession and Forgiveness

[Alternate location:  following Message]

Pastor / Worship Leader

In this current age, we confess that we are easily swayed and distracted to worship the things in this world instead of the One true God.

Worshipers

We feel ashamed to admit it, but it’s true.

Pastor/ Worship Leader

In our human state, we search for a god to worship.  We worship money, people, positions, and earthly materials.  We worship the universe, the environment, and yes, even ourselves.

Worshipers

For this, we are truly sorry.  We repent of idol worship and confess our struggles.  Lord God, please forgive us.

Pastor / Worship Leader

Jesus Christ is the only One worthy of our worship.  Lord, we turn our hearts, minds, eyes, and attention on You.

Worshipers

We ask You to fill us with Your Holy Spirit.  Renew our hearts and our minds.  Cleanse us from our sins.  May we only desire You, Jesus.  May we only worship You.

Pastor / Worship Leader

Help us, O God.  We love You and accept Your forgiveness.  In Jesus’ name, amen.

…  We Hear God’s Word  …

[Read aloud both the introduction and Scripture]

First Reading                                  Deuteronomy 18:15-20

God promised a line of prophets who will speak on His behalf to Israel just like Moses did.  He warned of false prophets and assured that their destinies would lead to death.

15 The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your fellow Israelites. You must listen to him. 16 For this is what you asked of the Lord your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said, “Let us not hear the voice of the Lord our God nor see this great fire anymore, or we will die.” 17 The Lord said to me: “What they say is good. 18 I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their fellow Israelites, and I will put my words in his mouth. He will tell them everything I command him. 19 I myself will call to account anyone who does not listen to my words that the prophet speaks in my name. 20 But a prophet who presumes to speak in my name anything I have not commanded, or a prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, is to be put to death.”
