Description

Matthew 17:1-9

Matthew records the Transfiguration of Jesus. Jesus takes Peter, James, and John with him to the mountain to pray. And there He is transfigured. His face shines like the sun and his clothing is as white as the light. Moses and Elijah appear and are speaking with Jesus. And the voice of God is heard from the clouds saying, “This is my Son.”

Invocation

Pastor / Worship Leader

O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens.

Worshipers

The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein, for he has founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers.

Pastor / Worship Leader

Who is this King of glory? The Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord, mighty in battle!

Worshipers

Lift up your heads, O gates! And lift them up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory!

Pastor / Worship Leader

O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water. So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary, beholding your power and glory. Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you.

Worshipers

My mouth is filled with your praise, and with your glory all the day.

Pastor / Worship Leader

   Praise the Lord

Worshipers

   Amen!

Opening Prayer / Theme Introduction

Pastor / Worship Leader

Jesus, we love you and we worship you. You are the Son of Man and the Son of God. You are the One, who at your transfiguration our Heavenly Father said, “This is my Son, of whom I am well pleased. Listen to Him.” Lord Jesus, we are listening to you. Help us to listen to you even better. Help us to be obedient. Give us the courage to follow you, to do as you would do, to say what you would say. Jesus, we look forward to the day when we meet you face to face, to see you in your glory, to reside with you in heaven, for eternity. To worship you as you deserve. We love you and pray in your Holy Name. Amen.

Worshipers

   Amen!

Time of Confession and Forgiveness

[Alternate location:  following Message]

Pastor / Worship Leader

   Lord, we confess.

Worshipers

Lord God, we have sinned against you; we have done evil in your sight. We are sorry and repent.

Pastor / Worship Leader

Lord our God, in our sin we have avoided your call. Our love for you is like a morning cloud, like the dew that goes away early.

Worshipers

Have mercy on us; deliver us from judgement; bind up our wounds and revive us; in Jesus Christ, our Lord.

Pastor / Worship Leader

We confess that we have sinned in thought, word and deed. We have not loved you with our whole heart.

Worshipers

We have wandered and strayed from your ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts..

Pastor / Worship Leader

May the Father of all mercies cleanse us from our sins and restore us in his image to the praise and glory of his name, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Worshipers

   Amen!

…  We Hear God’s Word  …

[Read aloud both the introduction and Scripture]

First Reading                                  Exodus 24:8-18

Moses has been instructed to come up to the mountain and approach the Lord. He has sprinkled the blood of the covenant on the people of Israel and now goes. And the Glory of the Lord covers the mountain.(The people of Israel see this as a consuming fire.) Moses goes to the Lord and remains for forty days. God gives Moses the tablets of stone on which the Ten Commandments are written and instructions for building the ark and the tabernacle and all instructions for priests and worship.

Moses then took the blood, sprinkled it on the people and said, “This is the blood of the covenant that the Lord has made with you in accordance with all these words.” Moses and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and the seventy elders of Israel went up 10 and saw the God of Israel. Under his feet was something like a pavement made of lapis lazuli, as bright blue as the sky. 11 But God did not raise his hand against these leaders of the Israelites; they saw God, and they ate and drank.12 The Lord said to Moses, “Come up to me on the mountain and stay here, and I will give you the tablets of stone with the law and commandments I have written for their instruction.” 13 Then Moses set out with Joshua his aide, and Moses went up on the mountain of God. 14 He said to the elders, “Wait here for us until we come back to you. Aaron and Hur are with you, and anyone involved in a dispute can go to them.” 15 When Moses went up on the mountain, the cloud covered it, 16 and the glory of the Lord settled on Mount Sinai. For six days the cloud covered the mountain, and on the seventh day the Lord called to Moses from within the cloud. 17 To the Israelites the glory of the Lord looked like a consuming fire on top of the mountain. 18 Then Moses entered the cloud as he went on up the mountain. And he stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights.
