Description

Matthew 10:5a, 21-33

Matthew continues his description of Jesus sending out the 12 disciples. Jesus describes the difficulties they will face, the hatred, the rebellion, the persecution. He encourages them to not be afraid and to proclaim from the rooftops what He has taught them. It is their Father in heaven who will take care of them.

Opening Prayer / Theme Introduction

Pastor / Worship Leader

Heavenly Father, thank You for sending Your Son, Jesus Christ, to us. I know that through His death, I was made right with You. I recognize that His coming was not to bring peace in the world, but to bring a sword that is able to divide the world between those who will accept His love and those who will reject it. Give me courage to stand for the truth of Your Word even in the face of opposition. Help me to trust in You even when it means going against the world. As I face these conflicts, fill me with Your peace that surpasses all understanding. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Worshipers

   Amen!

Time of Confession and Forgiveness

[Alternate location:  following Message]

Pastor / Worship Leader

Lord, we confess. If you should mark iniquities, who could stand? We know that if we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

Worshipers

Not one of us does good, no, not one. We have stiffened our necks against your will, hardened our hearts to your Word, refused to hear your voice, pulled away from your loving embrace, despised correction, and forgotten you in our thoughts.

Pastor / Worship Leader

Yes, we have sinned against you. Father, we repent.

Worshipers

We come to Christ, who has promised rest for our souls. We take his yoke upon us. We desire to learn from him. Grant that we may bring forth the fruits of repentance from sincere hearts, which are precious in your sight.

Pastor / Worship Leader

We confess that although you have commanded us to proclaim from the rooftops the good news of the Gospel, we have been afraid to do so.

Worshipers

Forgive us Jesus for being fearful of man, for being afraid of what man will think of us, for being afraid to acknowledge you before others.

Pastor / Worship Leader

Lord have mercy and forgive us through Christ. Amen

Worshipers

   Amen!

…  We Hear God’s Word  …

[Read aloud both the introduction and Scripture]

First Reading                                  Jeremiah 20:7-13

Jeremiah prophesizes in the name of the Lord, but suffers for it. He has been beaten and put in the stocks for prophecies unacceptable to those in charge. Jeremiah laments. He feels deceived by God because of what happens to him when he speaks the word of God. But if he tries to remain quiet, the word of God is like a fire in his heart. It cannot be contained. At the end of the lament, Jeremiah sings and praises the Lord!

You deceived me, Lord, and I was deceived; you overpowered me and prevailed. I am ridiculed all day long; everyone mocks me.Whenever I speak, I cry out proclaiming violence and destruction. So the word of the Lord has brought me insult and reproach all day long. But if I say, “I will not mention his word or speak anymore in his name,” his word is in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones. I am weary of holding it in; indeed, I cannot.10 I hear many whispering, “Terror on every side! Denounce him! Let’s denounce him!” All my friends are waiting for me to slip, saying, “Perhaps he will be deceived; then we will prevail over him and take our revenge on him.” 11 But the Lord is with me like a mighty warrior; so my persecutors will stumble and not prevail. They will fail and be thoroughly disgraced; their dishonor will never be forgotten. 12 Lord Almighty, you who examine the righteous and probe the heart and mind, let me see your vengeance on them, for to you I have committed my cause. 13 Sing to the Lord! Give praise to the Lord! He rescues the life of the needy from the hands of the wicked.
