Mark 14:1-15:47
Just a few chapters earlier in Mark 11, we read about Jesus’ triumphal entry where crowds waved palm branches and proclaimed Christ as the blessed one who came in the name of the Lord. Yet, in today’s passage, we see Mark recounting the important events surrounding the death of Jesus including the anointing at Bethany, the Last Supper, Judas betraying Jesus, the trial before Pontius Pilate, the crucifixion, and finally, Christ’s burial. This stark contrast between the initial praise Jesus received and the eventual crucifixion provokes us to examine our own postures toward Jesus on this Palm Sunday. Are you following Jesus out of genuine belief and conviction? Or are you swayed by popular opinion and external circumstances?

Welcome to Palm Sunday when we remember the Lord’s triumphant entry on a lowly donkey but are faced with a paradox from triumph to the trial that led to Christ’s crucifixion. As we recount the Gospel of Mark and his retelling of the passion of Christ, let us posture ourselves in humility and gratitude.

Holy Father, we are enamored with Jesus, our Savior, who through His death on the cross rescued and redeemed us from the chasm sin caused. We have been adopted as sons and daughters into Your Kingdom family because of Jesus. How great is Your love for us, and we bestow upon You our worship today, giving You our all because You deserve it.

Worshipers
Some of us have heard the account of Christ’s death and have become numb to its lifechanging effect and transformative power. Forgive us, Lord, and give us fresh hearts, eyes, and minds to receive and believe Your Word.
Some of us have grown cold and believed the lies of the enemy. We’ve embraced apathy. Give us feet to stand in the name of Jesus Christ in Your truth. May our courage in You be stronger.
Some of us have a lukewarm faith, going with the flow of this culture and age, and have forgotten our first love- You, Jesus.
Forgive us, Father, for we have sinned. Forgive us our wayward ways and lead us into Yours. May we have unwavering faith in You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

First Reading Isaiah 50:4-9a
The servant of the Lord was described as the one who had been given the tongue of a teacher to sustain the weary with a word. The servant would remain steadfast, trusting in God’s support and confident that the Lord would uphold Him and silence His enemies.
The Sovereign Lord has given me a well-instructed tongue, to know the word that sustains the weary. He wakens me morning by morning, wakens my ear to listen like one being instructed. 5 The Sovereign Lord has opened my ears; I have not been rebellious; I have not turned away. 6 I offered my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard; I did not hide my face from mocking and spitting. 7 Because the Sovereign Lord helps me, I will not be disgraced. Therefore have I set my face like flint, and I know I will not be put to shame. 8 He who vindicates me is near. Who then will bring charges against me? Let us face each other! Who is my accuser? Let him confront me! 9 It is the Sovereign Lord who helps me. Who will condemn me? They will all wear out like a garment; the moths will eat them up.
