Invocation

Pastor / Worship Leader

O God, you are my God, for you I long; for you my soul is thirsting.

Worshipers

My body pines for you like a dry, weary land without water. So I gaze on you in the sanctuary
to see your strength and your glory. For your love is better than life, my lips will speak your praise.

Pastor / Worship Leader

So I will bless you all my life, in your name I will lift up my hands.

Worshipers

My soul shall be filled as with a banquet, my mouth shall praise you with joy. On my bed I  remember you. On you I muse through the night for you have been my help; in the shadow of your wings I rejoice.

Pastor / Worship Leader

My soul clings to you; your right hand holds me fast. Glory be to the Father….

Worshipers

All praise and honor, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, One God, now and evermore.

Pastor / Worship Leader

   Praise the Lord

Worshipers

   Amen!

Opening Prayer / Theme Introduction

Pastor / Worship Leader

All-powerful and ever-living God, in obedience to your will, our Savior took human flesh and died upon the cross and so became for us the great example of humility. As we honor his passion, help us to be united with him in his suffering, so that we may be one with him in the glory of his resurrection. Lord Jesus, give us life through your passion. Lord Jesus, you humbled yourself, becoming obedient even to death on a cross; grant that we may imitate you in fulfilling the Father’s will. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ who lives and reigns with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Worshipers

   Amen!

Time of Confession and Forgiveness

[Alternate location:  following Message]

Pastor / Worship Leader

Almighty God, we acknowledge and confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed; we have not loved you with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength; we have not loved our neighbor as ourselves. Deepen within us our sorrow for the wrong we have done, and the good we have left undone.

Worshipers

Lord, you are full of compassion and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy; there is always forgiveness with you! Restore to us the joy of your salvation; bind up that which is broken, give light to our minds, strength to our wills, and rest to our souls. Speak to each of us, and let your word abide with us until it has wrought in us your holy will.

Pastor / Worship Leader

Lord Jesus, we have sinned times without number, and been guilty of pride and unbelief, and of neglect to seek you in our daily lives.

Worshipers

Our sins and shortcomings present us with a list of accusations, but we thank you that they will not stand against us, for all have been laid on Christ.

Pastor / Worship Leader

Deliver us from every evil habit, every interest of former sins, everything that dims the brightness of your grace in us, everything that prevents us taking delight in you.

Worshipers

With you, O Lord, there is forgiveness.

Pastor / Worship Leader

In your mercy, restore the joy of our salvation; so that we may love you with a holy love.

Worshipers

   Amen!

…  We Hear God’s Word  …

[Read aloud both the introduction and Scripture]

First Reading                                  Isaiah 50:4-9a

The prophet Isaiah continues in the third of his four “Servant Songs,” where Jesus is prophesied as a suffering servant. The servant is beaten, mocked and spit upon. But he does not turn away.  Ultimately he is vindicated. It is the Sovereign Lord who helps him.

The Sovereign Lord has given me a well-instructed tongue, to know the word that sustains the weary. He wakens me morning by morning, wakens my ear to listen like one being instructed. The Sovereign Lord has opened my ears; I have not been rebellious; I have not turned away. I offered my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard; I did not hide my face from mocking and spitting. Because the Sovereign Lord helps me; I will not be disgraced. Therefore, have I set my face like flint, and I know I will not be put to shame. He who vindicates me is near. Who then will bring charges against me? Let us face each other! Who is my accuser? Let him confront me! It is the Sovereign Lord who helps me. Who will condemn me?
