Mark 10:46-52
Blind Bartimaeus was a beggar. We aren’t told if he was born in this condition or if he developed blindness later in his life. As a beggar, his life was seen as pitiful and most likely, embarrassing. So, when Bartimaeus began shouting at the top of his lungs for Jesus to heal him, the people around him tried to quiet him. But Jesus wasn’t ever moved by a person’s status quo. He was moved by faith. When Jesus asked Bartimaeus what he desired, the blind man desperately in faith responded, “Rabbi, I want to see!” It was this man’s faith that healed him and compelled him to follow Jesus.

Lord, as we read about Bartimaeus we can’t help but place ourselves in that noisy crowd. We know people like him, who are suffering, looked down upon, judged for their circumstances, and are rejected. We repent of participating in racism, prejudice, and shushing the needs of our brothers and sisters.

It was Bartimaeus’ faithful cry for healing that moved You. It was his belief and desperation that You heard. Forgive us for closing our ears and eyes to the hurting around us.

First Reading Jeremiah 31:7-9
The Lord promised to return His remnant Israel to a safe and whole state where there would be peace. This return journey would bring about praise and relief from the people toward God.
7 This is what the Lord says:“ Sing with joy for Jacob; shout for the foremost of the nations. Make your praises heard, and say, ‘Lord, save your people, the remnant of Israel.’ 8 See, I will bring them from the land of the north and gather them from the ends of the earth. Among them will be the blind and the lame, expectant mothers and women in labor; a great throng will return. 9 They will come with weeping; they will pray as I bring them back. I will lead them beside streams of water on a level path where they will not stumble, because I am Israel’s father, and Ephraim is my firstborn son.
