Description

Luke 6:17-26

People from all over Judea, Jerusalem, Tyre, and Sidon came to be healed by Jesus who was exuding God’s power.  As he was healing diseases, Jesus turned to his beloved disciples, mortals just like us, and blessed the poor, hungry, and persecuted on behalf of Christ assuring them that their reward would be great in heaven.  As these disciples listened, there’s no doubt that some of them pondered of their own imperfections.  This is the beauty of the Gospel—that we sinners are made saints through the transforming work of the Spirit of Christ.

Opening Prayer / Theme Introduction

   Pastor/Worship Leader speaks

Pastor               O God, we trust in Your power to sustain us.  Nothing from this earth or from humankind

can fulfill us.  As we worship you today, help us to give our everything and hold nothing

back from You.  May we experience your healing touch.  We pray this in Jesus Christ’s

                           name.

ALL                 Amen.

Time of Confession and Forgiveness

[Alternate location:  following Message]

Pastor               Lord, we are sinners so gracious for the sacrifice of our Savior to make us saints, part of

                           Your body.

ALL                  We are your children, imperfect, lacking in ability, and guilty of sin.

Pastor                Help us recognize our sin for what it is.  Empower us to move from the desert wasteland

that sin is to the flourishing land of new life in Christ Jesus.

ALL                  Forgive us for our sins, we pray, Lord.

Pastor               Yes, forgive us our sins and enable us to live in unison with Your will.

ALL                  We pray in Jesus’ name.  Amen.

First Reading                                  Jeremiah 17:5-10

The one who trusts in man is like living in a dry, lonely wasteland in the desert.  But one who trusts in God is like a flourishing tree receiving life from water.  Only the Lord understands the hearts of people, and He rewards them according to their conduct.

This is what the Lord says: “Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who draws strength from mere flesh and whose heart turns away from the Lord. That person will be like a bush in the wastelands; they will not see prosperity when it comes. They will dwell in the parched places of the desert, in a salt land where no one lives. “But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.” The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? 10 “I the Lord search the heart and examine the mind, to reward each person according to their conduct, according to what their deeds deserve.”
