Description
(Matthew 9:35-10:8, (9-23))
Matthew, a disciple of Christ, recounts Jesus traveling and preaching in the synagogues proclaiming the good news and healing diseases and illness. Jesus sends out the twelve disciples (who are named here) with authority to heal and with specific message and instructions. They are only to go to the lost sheep of Israel, not the Gentiles. They are sheep among wolves; yet they are to take nothing for provision, they are to depend on God.

Opening Prayer / Theme Introduction
Pastor / Worship Leader
Jesus, Lord of all, Send us out as you did your first followers. Fill us with your Spirit that we may share the fullness of your good news. You are with us. Your kingdom draws near. Fill us with your saving power; Make us ambassadors of your healing and wholeness, your justice and welcome, your resurrection and deliverance. Fill us that we may trust you completely. Free us with simplicity. Break the chains of over planning, earthly comfort, and mortal securities. Hallelujah to our Savior and King! Thank you for meaning and purpose. Thank you for entrusting us with your good news. Thank you for the honor of serving and bearing your name. In Jesus’ Holy Name, Amen.
Worshipers
Amen!
Time of Confession and Forgiveness
[Alternate location: following Message]
Pastor / Worship Leader
Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.
Worshipers
Lord, we confess that we have been disobedient. We have ignored your call, your word. We have happily accepted your grace and mercy but have not responded by following you.
Pastor / Worship Leader
For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight; so you are right in your verdict and justified when you judge.
Worshipers
Lord we confess to you that we have been afraid to go out, to be obedient, to share the Gospel to those we know are unsaved. Family members and friends. Co-workers and neighbors. We confess that we are afraid of what people will think of us. We have wanted the praise of people more than that of you.
Pastor / Worship Leader
Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.
Worshipers
Forgive us Jesus, yet again. Restore us. Help us to repent, to turn away from sin. To turn to you, our Savior. Open our lips, Lord, and our mouths will declare your praise.
Pastor / Worship Leader
Lord have mercy and forgive us through Christ. Amen
Worshipers
Amen!
We Hear God’s Word
[Read aloud both the introduction and Scripture]
First Reading Exodus 19:2-8
The Israelites have been rescued from the bondage of Egypt. They have witnessed God’s great miracles and deliverance. God calls to Moses and promises that they will be a great nation and God’s treasured possession- if they obey him fully. Moses gives this word of God to the Israelites, and they say they will do everything the Lord commands.
After they set out from Rephidim, they entered the Desert of Sinai, and Israel camped there in the desert in front of the mountain.3 Then Moses went up to God, and the Lord called to him from the mountain and said, “This is what you are to say to the descendants of Jacob and what you are to tell the people of Israel: 4 ‘You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. 5 Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine, 6 you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites.” 7 So Moses went back and summoned the elders of the people and set before them all the words the Lord had commanded him to speak. 8 The people all responded together, “We will do everything the Lord has said.” So Moses brought their answer back to the Lord.
