Description

Mark 4:35-41

As Jesus was sleeping in the stern, a furious storm approached the waters causing crashing waves.  The disciples panicked and woke Jesus who commanded the wind and waves to be still.  But to His terrified disciples Jesus asked, “Why are you so afraid?  Do you still have no faith?”  Life is full of unexpected squalls and windy situations.  In the middle of life’s storms, do you find yourself afraid and faithless?  If so, turn your eyes to the calmer of the wind and the waves, Jesus, and trust Him with your life.

Invocation

Pastor                Welcome!  Maybe your arrival here felt like a bit of a whirlwind.  Let’s all take a deep breath as we fix our eyes on the calmer of the wind and storm.

ALL                  His name is Jesus!

Opening Prayer / Theme Introduction

Pastor               Lord, as you stilled the furious squall, still our hearts before you now.  Where fear resides

in the corners of our hearts, may your perfect love cast it out.  We recognize your

authority as God and bow ourselves low at your feet.

ALL               Beautiful Jesus, you are worthy of all the honor, glory, and praise forever, Amen!

Time of Confession and Forgiveness

[Alternate location:  following Message]

Pastor               Lord, we are wretched sinners in desperate need of Your mercy.

ALL                  So, we come as sinners to a very loving God.

Pastor               You know precisely the dimensions and intentions of our hearts.

ALL                  From you, we cannot hide.

Pastor               If we say we aren’t sinners, we deceive ourselves, for all have sinned.

ALL                  So we confess to you now and to each other as we celebrate the Gospel together.

Pastor               And we gladly accept Your forgiveness for our sins as we desperately need your

                          sanctifying grace.

ALL                  Thank you, Jesus!  Amen.

…  We Hear God’s Word  …

[Read aloud both the introduction and Scripture]

First Reading                                  Job 38:1-11

The Lord boldly answers Job’s questions from out of the storm laying out every detail of the earth’s foundation and reminding Job of God’s sovereignty.

Then the Lord spoke to Job out of the storm. He said:“Who is this that obscures my plans
with words without knowledge? Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me. “Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me, if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it? On what were its footings set,
or who laid its cornerstone— while the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy? “Who shut up the sea behind doors when it burst forth from the womb, when I made the clouds its garment and wrapped it in thick darkness, 10 when I fixed limits for it and set its doors and bars in place,
11 when I said, ‘This far you may come and no farther; here is where your proud waves halt’?
